David Hewlett destroys the show

In generally I like Stargate Atlantis, but the David Hewlett character almost destroys the show. What is he supposed to be? A comic relief? He's just annoying and makes an otherwise pretty good tv-series to just above average. I saw Stargate Universe after this, and thought it was much better, but I can most imdb users disagree.

At first, I found him annoying. Over time, he grew on me.

I hated him on SG-1 and found him incredibly annoying.

But he rapidly became my favorite character on Atlantis. His chronic overreactions to everything, alongside his massive ego and total selfishness, were hilarious to me.

(Yet, McKay wasn't malicious like a lot of the Universe characters. After 15+ episodes of watching that series, I liked NO ONE and would have been happy to see all of them die, whereas with Atlantis, I cared about all the main characters almost from the get-go. Universe tried to hard to be a cheap rip-off of Battlestar Galactica, who may have had damaged characters, but at least I cared about them.)
