David Hewlett destroys the show

In generally I like Stargate Atlantis, but the David Hewlett character almost destroys the show. What is he supposed to be? A comic relief? He's just annoying and makes an otherwise pretty good tv-series to just above average. I saw Stargate Universe after this, and thought it was much better, but I can most imdb users disagree.

In fact Davids interpretation of the character made the show. The comedy was meant to be unintentional from him. Like Sheldon most of the time in Big Bang. Of course his beind a brit hardly makes him likeable does it. I noted that Joe does not attract great amounts of negative posts but I have seen a few negatives about Amanda Tapping also a brit. Teyla has come in for much negativity about looks and character interpretation. I will only mark her down for one episode where she was a hive queen. I feel that she was mostly like Mr Spock was on the Star Trek stories. Never excited and trying to logically deal with any given situation. Her usage of the English language seemed stilted and old fashioned but it was not surely her first language. Words sounded carefully chosen.

I will agree that losing Beckett made no sense especially if ways had to be found to reincarnate him. Or perhaps that was a long term storyline anyway.

I have to go back to SG1 as I never saw that through to the end and do not know how much I missed. I did enjoy Universe and saw in one of the last episodes here of Atlantis how those stones worked.

I am still not sure how the gates were allowed to stand on all those planets which mainly had medieval lifestyles yet were never surprised by arrival of strangers. Also some seemed almost STEAM PUNK lifestyle.

Why was the wraith never hinted at in any of the other series. Mind you Firefly also had those almost wild west cultures.

If memory serves the original earth star gates were well hidden.

Jewel Staite comes in for some negativity. Now if she only had transferred her firefly skills it could have helped in some situations. Of course she is Canadian a lesser person. I had no thoughts about how she played out her character. She did not make the lines up and just to show that I can objectify She falls into that Jen Anniston mould and in Brain Storm it was pleasing to have evidence of her doughy mammerys. Mind you that makes me wonder why the popularity of that Scotsman Beckett also classed as a brit who must surely have been a better accented engineer for the modern Star Trek outings. Sorry Simon no offence meant.

Again the feeding off each other with Beckett and Zelenka in a competitive manner added to the series.

NO I disagree David Hewlett and his portrayal of slightly cowardly competitive and of course socially awkward Rodney was a welcome diversion in every episode.

David Hewlett is not that much of a Brit - He was born in England, but he moved to Canada at a very early age. He seems to most identify himself with Canada and I think that's how most people view him (I suspect that if you asked most fans they'd think he was born Canadian).

Same with Amanda Tapping - Her family moved from England to Canada when she was 3. Interestingly, when she started Sanctuary she got a lot of criticism for being a Canadian (or an American, as some people labeled her) doing a bad English accent, to which other people would defend it as not that bad and, in doing so, point out that her parents are English.

Watched several episodes here and there and can nothing but agree. Hes the main reason why i dont like atlantis AT ALL. Anyway, giving it another go and watch all of the episodes and see how far i get this time and see why on earth this gets an 8.1 on IMDB.
But its not just him everyone is overacting or not acting and none of em is believable or amicable, just a bunch of idiots blabbering about trying to sound important. Bleh.

Rodney was a terrible character. He was an egocentric coward. The less he is in an episode, the better I like it. The writers were forced to change his character into a heroic Super Genius. When the show was originally aired, I didn't notice how much I hated him because it was only one hour a week. Now that I've been watching the series as a whole, several episodes at a Time, I find myself skipping some episodes completely where he is just too annoying to watch.

Hewlett actually saves this show. At least Rodney's got a personality, compared to the other empty, hollow, boring, lame cookie cutter characters like Teyla, Ronon or Sheppard.

reply

I acutally like Rodney's character.

He was a little neurotic at times, but I think that his character was pretty good.

They did overuse him a bit, though.

I found this show to be a bit bland at first. Couldn't work up much enthusiasm for it. But when I fell in love with Rodney McKay I fell in love with the show. Funny, quirky, lovable, neurotic and entertaining. He's the best. Period!!

reply

That's kinda funny, I wanted to dislike him. But seeing all the other actors, Ronan, teyla, sheppard, ford, Jewel staite. I think he's the only good thing about this show.

HAHA 8.1! Star Trek deep space nine is waaaaay better than this sh*t.

reply

His abuse towards Zelenka was pretty disgusting. The apology he gave in Tao of Rodney was cathartic but then we went right back to doing it again.

I agree I thought all his yelling was annoying as hell. I wonder if life portrays art in his case.

I agree that McKay destroys the show. But I don't agree that the show is above average or that McKay is the only problem with it.

What is he supposed to be? A comic relief?

That seems to be their intention. They apparently thought that by writing an annoying character and having the other characters acknowledge him as being annoying, that will make him no longer be annoying and instead be funny.

But in reality, that plan doesn't work, and McKay remains extremely annoying irrespective of how many times the characters state that fact. He is definitely one of the most annoying characters ever put on film. McKay is the antithesis of entertainment.
