David Hewlett destroys the show

In generally I like Stargate Atlantis, but the David Hewlett character almost destroys the show. What is he supposed to be? A comic relief? He's just annoying and makes an otherwise pretty good tv-series to just above average. I saw Stargate Universe after this, and thought it was much better, but I can most imdb users disagree.

I actually liked the character, When the show first started he was the arrogant person we were introduce to in SG-1 but as the show grew, The character got better and changed over the season's

reply

I agree that Rodney's annoying, but usually the humor that comes with it more than makes up for it. Usually. Sometimes, yeah, he's just insufferable.

reply

I hated him, he became one dimensional. The episode when he got a parasite in his brain and was dying showed a more complete character.

Thanks and good night. XxX Love and light.

Although I like Rodney, towards the end of the series I did think they overused his character at the expense of the others. However, if you listen to SGA fans many of them say he's their favorite character and adore David.

But I'd watch an entire series of nothing but Rodney talking to himself before I'd say SGU was better...

Yes, I can see, why people in genrally likes Atlantis better than Universe. The show is longer, more actions and more what should I say...Easier to watch, in a way that it's more light, maybe Entertainment wise(poor Choice of Words, from being from an not English-speaking country). What I like about Universe though is seriousness and more darker tone, which favours me. Less humour, but in a way more realistic character protraials. I really like the original Movie. I hate the cartoon show, which was pure crap, and I have not seen Sg-1, so I've been seeing the shows in wrong order:-(

Rodney takes getting used to. He starts out as a character that we love to hate, and eventually we lose the hate, as he receives character development.

SGU is a great show. SGA is in its own way. Different styles. The way you described both shows is right, your English is fine. I've heard many people who like the original movie say they also like SGU, or vice versa, there are some similarities.

Watch SG1, it's a great show. Be patient with it. It is not like SGU. However, it gradually changes. Seasons 1-5 transition and mature over time. Season 6 kind of stands on its own. Many people say season 7 is their favorite. The show changes in season 8, and even more during seasons 9 and 10. You might like the last two or three seasons more. However, be sure to watch the entire series. Remember to watch The Ark of Truth and Continuum after you finish the series.

Thanks for that mate. The reason I've not seen sg-1 yet, is because it's extremely hard finding the Complete boxset here in Norway(the Nordic edition With Norwegian subtitles, and which also contains the the two tv-Movies). I saw the original Movie long ago, when it was New, and saw it again 6 months ago, than I saw Atlantis, followed by universe, than at last the horrible Infinity cartoon series. I tought sg-1 and atlantis were similar in style? I'm just recently finished With Infinity, so I'm hunting every Norwegian autions sites weekly for the sg-1 one boxset, as it is nowhere to find New in stores.

reply

I think you're the first Scandinavian person that I've seen who says they need the subtitles ;) I kid, of course. I'm guessing it's just a preference? If it goes too long, though, you should just find it online.

I think you have hit the right note. Rodney is the best developed and most prominent character in the show. As the series went on, they seemed to rely more and more on him and that might not have been the best idea each time. There is such a thing as too much of a basically good thing. It could have been that the scripts available just worked out that way. As for SGU, no doubt it was a failed effort. It was barely recognizable as being part of the same mythos and offered little to replace that gaping hole.

reply

Some people would say completely the opposite. I think he's the one who holds the show together. Also, the character may often be annoying, but he is also entertaining, and sometimes, dramatic.

reply

Universe distanced itself from the canon. It's more dramatic, there's little to no humor, and it's more about relationships than exploration of space.
I love how Star Trek was able to combine all those qualities together.

reply

Your crazy!! Rodney was awesome!!

reply

Haha, probably to some. For me he was just annoying. Way to childish portrayal. I think he is a character who would have been Perfect for cheesy 90's tv-shows as Xena, Hercules or The adventures of Sinbad. I hate Comic reliefs characters in general. Example: I like Macgyver for the most episodes, but every episode where Jack Dalton shows up, is for me a dissaster.

reply

He not only aced that character he made it great even when the writing wasn't very good. You act like all he did was comic relief and that just isn't true. Have you watched the whole series? You comparing him to Jack Dalton tells me you haven't?

reply

Yes, I've watched all the series, and ofcourse he has a role to play and surely he isn't just a comic relief, but alot of the times he is. Hard to say how much he is a comic relief, but WAY, WAY over 50% of the time. If you want to argue on that, I return the question: Have you watched the entire series? By the way, the comparison to Jack Dalton is not all that bad. If I had to choose whom of them who Plays the comic relief part the most, I'd og with Dalton, but it's a pretty close race. (On every forum there's jerks who just can't except others opinions without start to arguing. I Guess you are the jerk on this forum. I understand, you love the Hewlett character. Fine! I hate him. Also fine! Opinions vary you know).

reply

Yes, I have watched the whole series. And I find him one of those characters we love one minute, and hate the next. And strangely enough, those happen to be some of my favorite TV characters.

Is he the Rodney guy? If so I actually liked him most of the time, on Stargate SG-1 and then on Atlantis. But he did get a bit annoying towards the end.

reply

Yeah, the OP is talking about Dr. Rodney McKay.
