Honestly... one of the best movies ever.

I am huge movie critic... and I don't like most of the movies I see. They have terrible, over used plots. Bad acting that is supposed to be overlooked because of overused special effects. They have so many goofs, holes and other crap that makes the movie just sucky.... but this... this film is easily one of the best movies I've ever seen. Yes it is pretty easy to guess the ending but it still wasn't ruined by that fact. It is a work of art. It is rewatchable.

I didn't watch the last 20 minutes. The movie was giving me a headache.Normally I enjoy this stuff I understood Matrix the first time I saw it,most ppl dont. This one went straight over my head!

reply

Ok, so I thought it was only me, but after watching this movie, I had a massive headache also. I thought the movie was terrible. It was all over the damn place and difficult to follow. Nothing to do with IQ, but all the scene changes my head was literally hurting.

Maybe the voices in their head scenes did me in. Those were annoying as was that cartoon crap at one point in the movie. At that point I couldn't figure if they were trying to make it a dark comedy or not.

Again, terrible movie, and I can see why it did so poorly.

reply

The cartoon scenes were meant to be longer. But, Guy Ritchie feared that crtics or audiences would think that he was just trying to copy Kill Bill when he had the idea before then. As far as the movie goes, I know it isn't for everyone but there are some impressive pieces to it

"This is a $4000 sofa upholstered in Italian silk. Its not just a couch"
"ITS JUST A COUCH!"

reply

Warning! Watching this movie can give you a massive headache!
I had mine 2 aspirins to kill the ache.
Thanks, Ray Liotta, thanks Jason Statham i'm giving you 4/10

reply

@Muttley007 - you "understood the Matrix"? That was incredibly straight forward. Understanding it is no boastworthy feat.

reply

Altough Matrix touches some deep concepts, they are all directly explained in one way or the other. Real thinkers implie the answers, not give them away.

Who are these "most people" who don't understand The Matrix after one viewing? The film spends about half an hour explaining itself in excruciating detail. Exactly how did you come to the conclusion that the majority of people were confused by it? Was there a poll?

-There is no such word as "alot."

reply

Understanding the basics of the movie Matrix is easy, however all the little hiding secrets and twists is MUCH harder to first of all see and discover trough out ur time whe u watch the movie, but then also analyse them and understand them.

I had a harder time following that sentence than anything in The Matrix.

Rock n' roll, pumpkin...

Oh 'The Matix' !!

They call it complex? It's pretty hard to take when people associate movies like 'The Matrix' or 'Inception' to words like intelligent, complex etc., They are neither. (No wonder you didn't get this movie, when you think 'getting' The Matrix was a deal).

They are not well made movies with too much on the nose content and mindless action. They are not centered on their respective basic ideas and both movies drift towards insignificant details.

Movies like Revolver or 'eXistenZ' took presenting ideas to a new level, and achieved what pseudo intellectual movies like 'The Matrix' and 'Inception' couldn't (no wonder most people fell for the latter two - law of averages).

reply

I watched eXistenZ and it was awesome, rated it 10/10.

I just watched Revolver, and I've gotten a headache, literally.
Maybe because of those weird color scenes.

I rated it 6/10, because the movie was involving and interesting, but I still don't know what it was about.

reply

Fair enough, it wasn't the easiest movie to watch, but I could say the same about eXistenZ.

It's not easy to get into the tone of Revolver, but if you could - it pays off well.

reply

I agree with you and for all those people who find it hard to understand this carefully directed movie. I have quote for all such people "If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love you; but if you really make them think they'll hate you. - Don Marquis".

Because this movie makes people to think, they find this movie boring or stupid. I was over joyed watching this movie, same like I enjoyed the likes of Memento, The Prestige.

reply

I'm sorry to say but those movies actually had a plot.

This is like an amateurish take on Nolan's Momento, which you actually had to think about but at the same time could actually follow.

I think some people like to believe that they "understand" this movie just because it makes them feel smart, when in reality Revolver is an extremely pretentious film that regards nothing for intellectual minds but insteads wallows in its own confusion.

There's a lot of plot holes as well, which makes me question if this was deliberate or not.

I enjoy films that make us "think" but it has to give us something to think about, and not just give our cognitive machines an oiling for the sake of function.

reply

Real art is open to interpretation, just like paintings. Maybe the ultimate trick is making "intelectuals" believe thay understand something that wasn't meant to mean anything. I think this isn't the case, Guy actually worked on a message in here.

Sometimes the art is in the execution, not in the message, take jazz music for example. Some movies' worth is only in the execution, like real surrealist trippy s#!t without a real message like "Eraserhead" or "Naked Lunch".

ROTFL Memento, the greatest gimmick movie ever made, Nolan's a Hack

"Government is not a solution to our problem, government is the problem."

reply

Completely agree with the original post. Just watched it for a second time after I saw it years ago and I am completely blown away.

reply

Visually hypnotic. Makes you go out thinking. You an nitpik all you want (why is a man named Dorothy?) but it reallyis an excercise for the brain.

reply

Agree completely, this is a phenomenal film!!

reply

I agree with the OP. I didn't have a clue as to what was going on most of the time. But what a beautiful movie to watch!
And, of course, I love Jason Statham.

reply

Agreed. Masterfully made, unique and insanely intelligent film. A true masterpiece of cinema.
People complaining about having a headache after this film are a bunch of the biggest pussies I've ever seen. Go back to your gayclub and watch Care Bears instead.

reply

Hey, I think I also had a headache after I watched this, but of course it does not mean I don't consider it a great film.
I'm kind of offended by this...

reply

I wholeheartedly agree.. I've just seen it tonight and was blown away by it.. I will be thinking of this movie for a long time.

reply

I completely agree with the OP, I've just seen this movie and was really blown away by the beauty of it. I think I'll be re-watching it again real soon.
I loved it!

reply

my top ten films --> by number one is undoubtedly Revolver -- the rest are in no particular order.

1.revolver

2.flight club
3.matrix
4.battle royale [japanese]
5.Old Boy [korean]
6.Shawshank
7. Godfather Part 1
8.Inception
9.Prestige
10.Dark Knight

Revolver is hands down the most intelligent film i've ever seen. First time i saw it i loved it for style and for what i thought it was trying to achieve, but after i watched it again and again i realised that this was a piece of spiritual art. the final 20 minutes is poetic and like jake green, i've been battling with the enemy in my head ever since i was able to understand it, conquering my irrational fears etc etc.
"Wherever you do not want to be is where you will find him"
"where should you're greatest enemy hide? In the last place you'd ever look"
"you don't give because it is good, you give to hurt him"

I know exactly how you feel and what you mean. Mr. Gold is quite the powerful opponent.

Great movie list by the way.

reply

Great Movie list are you guys serious? Now I'm not on the hate or love train with this flick. I watched it and did not get a headache nor did I think it was the most intelligent piece of cinema I've ever seen. I found it a little pretentious and winded, but it was also artfully executed and entertaining. Also the acting was very pleasing. Now onto your list, I'm not trying to be a douche, some of those movies are solid picks and its always subjective to your opinion. But on the whole the Godfather is a completely overrated movie, also Oldboy? Come on man, if you want to watch a great foreign film pick up "The Lives of Others" which wipes its ass with Oldboy and Battle Royal. Also I feel like Shawshank is everyone's go to movie in their top ten, and Revolver being No. 1, all I can say is wow. Have you ever seen American Beauty? Watch that movie again and then honestly tell me Revolver is still #1. Ok my rant is finished, I mean no disrespect but this is a movie site for movie buffs so my voice had to be heard.

reply

I have to admit this movie really stepped up in the third act. I was ready to shut it off half way throu but its Ritchie he is the British Tarantino (or Tarantino is the American Ritchie depending on what side of the pond your from but that is another board). I had a good idea that this was a psychological type of movie but not to this extent. VERY underrated and that is only one viewing, definatly one I will buy in the next couple days. Acting is incredible, story is so original that you don't quite get it because you never saw it before. Well done.

reply

This movie has a story?

Please, Ritchie is way better than Tarantino..
Tarantino is too infantile
