The MOST DEPRESSING movie I have EVER seen!!

I mean... This is coming from a guy that has Black Swan, Atonement, Memoirs of a Geisha, 21 Grams, La Vie en Rose, A beautiful mind, The Hours, Melancholia...etc on his top 20 list, most of these movies can be REALLY depressing...

But this, This is WAY over the top, i mean i loved Christian's performance and the story was interesting to me, but i thought the director took it to a whole new level with the depression, IT WAS NOT FUN TO WATCH!! i still have a headache from watching it at 1:00 am .

Overall this movie isnt everybody's cup of tea, u either love it or u hate it. i gave it a 6/10

reply

Try seeing Lilja 4Ever, it is far more depressing.

"Pet Sematary" (and its vile sequel) are the most depressing films I have ever seen.

"'Night Mother" is easily a runner-up, as is "Carrie".

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

reply

for a 6/10 you must have neither loved nor hated it?! ;) It wasn't an uplifting film in any way and was pretty intense. But not depressing for me. the performance and plot made it engrossing and i loved it. The fact that Bale was so thin was a bit distracting though. He overdid the weight loss and i was desperate for him to just sit down and eat whereas maybe the audience was meant to hope he'd sleep

reply

The only thing I really found sad was where Bale yelled at the call girl angrily, just when they were starting to bond a relationship. But she may have not been real, WHO KNOWS?? o.O
I agree that the skinny Bale was disturbing.

reply

LOL black swan is not depressing. go watch Downloading Nancy --if you can handle it-- then we'll talk

Black Death. Million Dollar Baby. Requiem for a Dream.

reply

Yea definitely Requiem for a Dream. I thought Fargo was really depressing too. Never wanted to watch either of those movies again even though they are great films.

reply

I never though Requiem would ever be topped, but you guys need to watch Graveyard of the Fireflies, it is far more depressing that leaves you with a knot in your stomach for days, because it does not have a climax where you break down and fall on your knees and cry your eyes out. When that does not happen, it gets stuck inside of you until one day something happens and you collapse in tears like Robert DeNiro in Analyze This. I never found Fargo depressing. Million Dollar Baby felt too commercial, yes it was a touching picture, but not %100 pure in sense of other depressing movies out there.

reply

The Machinist was a very bleak and depressing movie. It was very Lynchian and I was constantly reminded of Lost Highway as I watched the film.

I second Requiem for a Dream as a completely bleak and depressing film. It is a good film, but powerful in its depiction of addiction and the decline it can drive people to.

Demon Lover also comes to mind. Though that to me is the child of the original exploitation as warning of exploitation Videodrome. Mind bending and soul rending.

And lets not forget 8mm.

There are plenty of movies that are more visceral and cruel. You need only look at the last 5 to 10 years of "horror" with the Hostel, Saw, Human Centipede. Go even farther back to the real fringe/underground classics of Zombi, I Spit on Your Grave, Last House on the Left, August Underground, Men Behind the Sun, Guinea Pig, etc.

But those movies roll around in the viscera and not the mind. They are obvious in their cruelty and exploitation.

Good call on 8mm, which just gets more and more of a downer as the film grinds on. May as well toss Taxi Driver in there as well. All three do have some odd moments of levity, though. Trevor calling the armed robber with "evidence" and how he was gong to use it always cracked me up.

reply

I just recently watched Gummo. Now THAT is one depressing MFer.

This movie didn't depress me but it did make me feel really, really uncomfortable. Especially during the scenes with Ivan.
