Corrections about Europe

Some Major errors about Europe in the movie:

1. Why Manchester United Supporters in London? Why didn't they pick Chelsea, West Ham, Millwall...hooligans? Manchester is situated about 330km north of London.

2. Crans-sur-Mer doesn't exsist and the location shows the landscape of southern France (St-Tropez) while they actually are on the location of Calais or Boulogne-sur-Mer in Northern France.

3. While going from Bratislava to Berlin, the map on the dinertable shows a representation of the Black forest (Schwartzwald). The Black Forest actually is located in South-Western Germany (at the frontier with Alsace, France).

4. It's impossible to see as many trees next to the Louvre in Paris.

5. It's not possible to announce the death of the pope and having a new one on the same day. They're must be a conclave with all of the cardinals of the world under the age of 80 to elect a new one...so nobody would actually believe that Scott is the new pope.

6. The map on the table showd Rome to be on the east of Berlin....Rome is to the south of Berlin.

7. Scotty says they're's no drinking age in England...The drinking age is 18 in England (16 in my country, Belgium).

reply

technically, there's a drinking age in germany. in all honesty, when was the last time you've seen it enforced?

reply

I don't think you can consider those kinds of errors 'major' in a comedy, take a chill pill buddy.

reply

In the movie they mention that it would be a first if the new pope was picked the same day the pope died. So that wasn't really a error is they explained the difference from real life and the movie some what.

The worst bit about this movie though, is that's it's a posterboard for America's prudish nature. It's hilarious that they say at the start the US was founded by prudes, because this movie seems to advocate prudishness rather than object to its full-blown hypocrisy. The message seems to be something along the lines of; it's a good thing the US was founded by prudes, else the US would be as freaky/gay as Europe.

Oh and..

8. The exchange rate between the Euro and the Dollar is NOT IN FAVOUR of the Dollar. What the hell were they doing with Dollars in Europe?

OK, now I understand you need something to discuss but gee...
Now, i'm 'European' (Poland to be specific) and have been and even lived there before,
and yes, there are a lot of factual errors,
but WHO CARES?
It's a stupid comedy, it doesn't have to be accurate.
And it's not insulting Europe either, they're just playing up certain stereotypes to appeal to a young audience.
Get over it.

Okey, so the drinking age in England is 18 but two of my friends, who are 16 years old, had no problem at all with buying beer while they were in Newcastle (and they don't look like 18 either). Therefore you can say that there's no drinking age since they simply don't seem to care.

reply

They didn't pick Chelsea, West Ham, or Arsenal because it's an American movie and none of those sides have the name recognition of Manchester United. If the English were to make a movie featuring an NBA team, chances are it would be the Lakers or the Celtics rather than Golden State or New Orleans.

Well, mostly because it's a well known English team, but also because, as the joke goes, people who live in Manchester support City. Everyone else supports United.
As a for instance though, I live in North England... and support Chicago Blackhawks. So prrrrptht.

You can drink whatever you want as long as you're 5 or over and on private property, you just can't buy it.

reply

I think that was actually just a stupid mistake they made. Cos they don't go to private property, they go to a pub.

If it makes anyone feel any better about the mis-matched Europe locations, the college at the end is definitely not Oberlin College... Oberlin is not that urban.

In the title sequence Slovakia isn't coloured with their own flag, in the Slovakian flag their is a shield which was not shown.
What bothers me the most is how American movies tend to portray Eastern European countries as dirty and retarded countries. In Hostel it even makes me angry as hell. Eastern European countries are filled with culture Americans can only dream about.
And I am not from Eastern Europe. I just adore Eastern Europe, it is lovely.
