I'm Glad She's Dead

This is truly an excellent movie. I like how it stays pretty morally relativist and allow the viewer to see that Wuornos actually was a monster.

I for one are am very glad that she's dead. It's a proven fact no murderer who receives the death penalty had ever re-offended.

Theron earned her Oscar with this one.

I know exactly what prison is like. It's hell on earth. Who cares? I have no sympathy for people like Aileen. She was a monster. If she suffers in prison, I do not care. One bit. I have no interest in rehabbing people like her.

As far as innocent people being killed, you are probably right. I am sure it has happened. I agree the death penalty could use some major overhauls. There should be strict rules and guidelines for when it's allowed. But never? No way.

You said:

You gotta figure in all the years we've been doing it, out of all the people we've executed, at LEAST one of them was innocent. Of course, its likely many many more than one, but the point is that when you kill someone, you can't go back and change that.

Fair enough. Agreed. That's why I said what I said above about tweaking the process. However, I'm going to throw this right back at you.

How many people, who have done horrible things, get to live? They get to do things in prison their victims never will. They can get an education. They can exercise and do many other things. Is it a great life? No, but it's more than the victim.

I agree with your first paragraph completely.

As far as your 2nd paragraph, you don't know that for sure. There would have to be several factors a case would have to fit into to be certain the criminal did it. Maybe like 5 factors and 3 (possibly 4) required in order to convict? In other words, make it virtually fool proof.

Plus, I just think of all the money it would save. How much money is spent providing food and other resources for these guys for the rest of their lives?

There have been plenty of cases in which people are certain the accused did it and it later emerges they didn't. There are already requirements in order to convict but that doesn't prevent wrong convictions. The law is run by humans so is therefore fallible and as long as the death penalty exists innocent people will get executed. Besides even people who are convicted through a "virtually" fool proof system what if they claim the person had abused them for years but that can't be proven or what if there is disagreement over whether the person was mentally ill to the point they didn't understand what they were doing?

And the death penalty is actually more expensive than life imprisonment is.

i saw this film last night , and drew the metaphor of the big dipper of being the "monster" ,
it represented some of her fears and how she trained herself to be disciplined , there is a monologue just before she rides the monster that is fantastic script and acting.
it portrayed wuornos as being a victim.
pointed the finger at society ,
if a heroic deed is a deed which is selfless , then in this film she performs a heroic deed for someone who , doesent have the maturity to be that selfless.
its interesting that there's a lesbian relationship ,
as it a hetro-sexual relationship i feel older women and younger men balance each other out well .
in this instance the the male and female roles in their relationship were more blurred .
but it could be said serial killing is a profession of sorts , and in that respect wuornos took on the male role in the relationship ,
a surprising tragic scene is where she cleans a cooker , it shows her trying to full fill a more female role the the relationship but she is faced with such anger . its like society has suppressed her femininity .

To the OP: While it was a well-done movie, I couldn't disagree more on it being morally relativist: they clearly try to make people empathize and pity her, which quite frankly disgusted me. Newsflash folks: every serial killer that has ever existed since the beginning of time has been abused. Bundy, Gacy, Richard Ramirez, etc. You name the serial killer and they have been abused. While it sucks that they were abused it doesn't even come close to providing an excuse for murdering people. Oh and by the way, I know some people have probably already said it, just because someone's with a whore doesn't mean they should be killed, should they be arrested? yes and if they're married they should probably get a divorce, but killed? no, not by a long shot. The only person in this movie who deserved to be killed was her rapist and her.

As for Theron, she definitely did earn her oscar with this performance.

What about Dahmer? I thought I heard that Dahmer had a really fcking normal childhood. There was just something in him that snapped, I guess.

Wrong. She was a human being. Monstrous actions, yes, but a human being all the same.

If she was a male and HE had raped and murdered a bunch of women, I highly doubt you'd be saying the same thing.

reply

No, I'd be saying the same thing, because all human lives are important and are assigned the same value. I'm against the death penalty no matter what.

i think dead penalty is most stupid thing it's plain and simple murder as well no matter or the government do it or someone.

second to say she was a monster i think 90% of the people are a monster as well you could see that in the movie the last 2 persons she killed (cop and man that picks here up on the road to give her a ride) was wrong they where good people in reality and wish to help her.... but she was so far gone because of other lunatics (worser then her) so who is the real bad guy in this movie i think the guy with the saw etc...(first guy she shoots) i think you need to be a prostitute to know it...

let me point out i do not say it's good what she did, but other people did make her that way, she did not do it all by herself, maybe we should put all these people then on the chair? insane
