I need your help - Is Undisputed the best boxing film?

Hi everybody I am doing a project for college on boxing films. Basically I want your opinions. Do you think that undisputed is the best boxing film of all time? If so why/why not? Do you feel that undisputed accuratley portrays the sport of boxing? If so how?
Finally, have any of you taken up boxing after watching undisputed?
If you can help me I would be very grateful

Thank you for your time

This movie is a great boxing movie, not a great movie, but a great boxing movie. Sure the plot is far fethced, and it get's kind of stupid at times, I will not deny that, but the actual fight scenes are some of the best and most well done boxing scenes I think I've ever seen. So if by best you mean best boxing scenes, then I would definately rank this movie up there. Another thing that makes this movie very good is the very deep and true message that it sends, like when Ving Rhames a.k.a Iceman is talking to the press about his perception of his own invincibility. He says something like "Nobody is unbeatable, all it takes is one bad day for you and one good day for him, and he may not even be that good, and you will lose". It's a harsh truth not many people want to admit, but boxers know all too well.

And anybody who thinks that Raging Bull or Rocky have better fight scenes than Undisputed have obviously never seen, let alone been in, a real boxing fight.

“If I knew I had to go to jail to see a fight like this, I’d a done the crime a long time ago.”

Walter Hll’s triumphant return to the top of the heap. The best genre film of 2002. Hill allows the pressure and characters to slowly build, each feeding into the other. This isn’t so much about the fight as it is about how the fight came about, and that story proves to be just as exciting as the one in the ring. Maybe even more so. From the opening sequences, with Hill’s Fukasaku-esque character intros, this is a lean, mean fighting machine.

I think The Raging Bull is the best.

The Great White Hype was a great movie, as well.

Rocky by far is the greatest boxing movie ever. Sorry :-)

The sports movie genre follows the same rules as the war movies genre, and that is the best war/sports movies are not actually about war/sports but rather about the people and emotions that are involved in it.

This is the reason why UNDISPUTED is not one of the best. It tries to just be about boxing and as a result you really do not care about the hero (which is extremely flat) and not so much the villain (but Rhames is alot better than Snipes in this).

*SPOILERS*

The fight is highly predictable, a typical bad guy comes out strong and then the good comes back and just dominates out of nowhere. Its not that this story/fight gets old, but throughout the movie there is never even a shred of doubt as to who is going to win.

*END of SPOILERS*

The fights scenes are very well done, and it really does seem like a fight. Rhames is true to the Foreman/Fraiser hard-hitting fighting style while Snipes moves and flows like Ali. I particularly enjoy the rules used in the fight and the atmosphere it is held in gives it a great 'epic' feel.

UNDISPUTED is a very good boxing movie, but since its main focus is on just boxing it does fall short of others.

are you out of your brains????? wat does gladiator gotta do with boxing????
gimme a break. although rest of your list is great and i agreee with you .

"Undisputed" is a good action/character movie that cleverly combines the boxing and prison genres. It has some great boxing sequences. But it isn't a classic and was never meant to be.

reply

lonelymanav- Gladiator (1992) had Cuba Gooding in it along with Brian Denehy and it is a boxing movie. Not to be confused with Gladiator (2000) with Russell Crowe.

Cinderella Man gets my vote for best boxing movie.

reply

Cinderella man truly is the best boxing movie. Not only is the boxing good, it's a great movie all in all.

reply

He is talking about a different "Gladiator" from 1992, directed by Rowdy Herrington, starring James Marshall, Cuba Gooding and Brian Dennehy. Not Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" from 2000.

Nobody has mentioned "Rocky Marciano" the bio pic of the only undefeated heavy weight.

It has been a while since I saw Undisputed but it is definatly not the best boxing movie ever. Fairly entertaining and the fight at the end was cool but in my opinion it takes to long to set up. I did not take up boxing after seeing this movie. Besides it makes it look like all the good boxers end up in prison.

Undisputed is quite possibly the worst film i have ever seen, not only in terms of sports of boxing films, but every single type.

It is an 1.5 hour cliche and is an embarrassment and an insult to anyone over the age of 10 with even an ounce of intelligence. The movie makes no sense, the plot is ludacris and all in all the whole thing is laughably poor.

Best boxing movie of all time? You must be joking.......i can't think of anything that i have ever seen that is worse.

reply

I thought it was great, yes the plot is ludicris...but then again so was the matrix, so just because there isnt people flying round doesn't mean a film cant be far fetched...this is the type of film to just enjoy for what it is and I did, alternatively they could have had lots of crying men kissing and won a *beep* oscar!

"Requiem for a Heavyweight" with Anthony Quinn and Julie Harris - written by Rod "Twilight Zone" Serling.... Google it! The BEST!

Ye Must Be Born Again

reply

There is a reason or moral to it.

Monroe can never acknlowedge that he is the undisputed champion because the fight wasn't supposed to happen. So he can't claim that he beat the Former World Champion, so Monroe effectively looses and Ice man wins.

rocky is the best boxing movie ever made. duhhh !

It almost sounds like a troll question but I'll answer anyway.

If you mean the greatest boxing documentary then i can only think of When we were Kings.

If you mean best movie that heavily features/revolves around boxing then i'd go for:

Raging Bull - Just amazing in every respect. Arguably Scorceses's and De Niro's best work

Cinderella Man - which, surprisingly, only one other person has mentioned. Great

Rocky (ies) - mixed bag, certainly most popular/influential, 5 is my favourite :)

Million Dollar Baby - if your writing a college project then you should mention this one as it will give you a great gender angle. Very good film

The Hurricane - I've heard good things about this one

Ali - Some say underrated i say overrated

Gladiator (1992)- Thanks for reminding me about this guys. I remember watching it when i was a teen. Nowhere near the quality of the others but fun.

You could mention Snatch and Pulp Fiction as they have some boxing in them and are great.

NO WAY!! Hurricane is much better :)

Unprocessed fish sticks mm that's good =)

In my opinion, "Rocky Balboa" by Sylvester Stallone is the best film about boxing of all time.

Then:

2.- "Cinderella Man".

3.- "Hurricane...", starred by Denzel Washington.

4.- "Ali" by Michael Mann.

5.- "Undisputed"

...

"Raging Bull" is not about Box, and his fights are metaphysics, are not correspond with the reality in any aspect.

reply

I need to tell you that I went out and rented Rocky Balboa based on your comment here and you owe me $3 and two hours of my life. Rocky Balboa is an embarrassingly maudlin piece of crap. You know when Paulie says, "Rocco, I can't take no more of this," he was 100% right.

reply

[deleted]

There are many other movies (not mentionned previously) about boxing tht, in my opinion, are much better than "undisputed", for example : "Rocco e i suoi fratelli" and "Play it to the bone".

I'm not sure what was in "undisputed" is a good description of what boxing is. A fight in a prison is not your ordinary idea of boxing. It doesn't change my view on that sport, and don't make me want to start practising boxing.

reply

The Rocky series is the best, followed by Cinderella Man.. The Fighter is also a pretty good movie..
