Dr.David or Ben?

Both have their own strengths and weakness but which is you favorite?

Definitely David, couldn't stand Ben much.

reply

Really, Why would anyone prefer David?

reply

I personally didn't like David because he was far too uptight and controlling.

reply

Agreed, David was far too controlling. But one thing I never noticed til recently is that you can see this even early in his and Michael's relationship.

reply

It's pretty sad that he can be in such love and uproot his entire life and will only spend a day or two feeling sad about it.

See, here's my take on the whole Dr. David situation: I don't think Michael really loved him. I'm sure he liked him a lot, and *wanted* to be in love with him, and maybe their relationship would have progressed normally if David hadn't moved away (and if Brian wasn't in the picture!), but I don't think Michael really loved him.

I think his move-in with David was caused by a few things: His turning 30, feeling old, and the ribbing he was getting from his friends, Brian in particular; the extreme pressure from Debbie (just watched episode 11, with Mikey's surprise 30th birthday party, and wanted to smack the crap out of her!) and her desire for a rich, medical-professional son-in-law; Mikey's unrequited yearning for Brian, and wanting to try and move away from him and their youthful ways (a futile effort, if you ask me!); the general envy of his group of friends due to the fact that he had a rich, successful boyfriend.

I think Michael felt the pressure of turning 30 in a big way, and decided that he 'should' grow up and be more mature. Moving in with David and having a serious relationship was the result of that. David had initially pressured him to move in, and was so desperate for a life partner that his ultimatum to Mikey was, either we move in together, or the relationship ends. Michael wasn't ready, so the relationship ended.

Then Debbie had her little talk with Brian, so Brian decided to push Michael away in a way only Brian could. He thought he was doing Mikey a favor at the time; plus, Debbie was practically a mother to him, so he wanted to please her as well, I think.

Don't think Michael really loved David either. Michael actually said as much in ep. 201, when he said something to the effect that "when you love, or think you love someone".

reply

Definitely Ben. I found QAF on Netflix binge watched it a few weeks ago. Watched like all 5 seasons in two weeks, so I didn't process everything like I should have.

I'm finally on my second viewing of the show, and watching it much slower. On my first go around, I really liked David (and Ben, too) even though I had some issues with his treatment of Mike.

However, on this second go around on the series, I really came to dislike David with a passion for much of the season. He was good in a few episodes, but most of the time, I saw him for what he really was -- a control freak who had no respect or concern for Michael's feelings.

But the ultimate undoing for me on David was when Michael asked David that if the situation was reversed, would he drop everything and move across the country with Michael, and David told him probably not. Even though he expected Michael to do just that. That is a hypocrisy I can not stand.

I have of seen Ben and Michael sporadically thanx to youtube and I've seen all of Michael and David, from what I have seen it's Ben all the way. #1 being because I feel Michael wanted Ben more than he wanted Brian; which is something I did not see when he was with David. I always got the feeling that Michael wanted to love David but really didn't and he would drop David the instant Brian hinted a romantic interest. With Michael I felt he let go of his crush on Brian. AGAIN I have not seen all the eps with them, just a few on YouTube.

Always wondered how things might have gone with Michael and Ben if they had met a year earlier when Brian and Michael were not quite ready to let each other go. Also wonder how things would have gone with David had he and Michael got together after Michael's Brian fixation had calmed somewhat.

How the heck did you do that? I'm amazed!

reply

Not sure what this has to do with this thread. But have to say, what was the hurry? If one watches any show in such a high concentration they will get much less out of it.

They really wrote Dr. David well. He had to fight for Michael and won, but he wasn't for Michael, and he lost. Ben on the other hand had Michael fighting for him. Ben was rational and endearing. And just when you wanted to make him a saint, they made him real by having him be jealous of Michael's success, not Michael. So I choose Ben.

They did write David well for the most part. There was the almost cartoonish way David was depicted as viewing Michael as a trophy wife. But overall it was fairly balanced, though I still greatly disliked the man. And it didn't appear that David so much lost as that he gave up, probably the right move.

Nice and rational as Ben was, he was too nice at the beginning. They gave him a dark side and made him more well rounded just as Ben's perfection started to become boring.

Very pragmatic reasoning for why Ben was so permissible about Michael and Brian. But don't agree Ben was so desperate to get anyone that he'd tolerate such behavior unless he was at least somewhat okay with it.

If Ben was appreciative of Michael's willingness to be with him despite his status

I think that at that point in Ben's life, he was settled enough to know he wanted a partner who would love him in his entirety. He would've acted differently...as if he wanted to cling to something and thus hold Michael closer to him like David did.

I disagree but it's an interesting point I never thought of before

I don't understand this answer.

What I liked about David:

He was a gentleman, he liked Michael and he wanted to make sure he did things right when they started dating.

He wanted to show Michael there was a world outside Liberty Avenue

He was confident and knew enough about himself, but still was flawed

What I didn't like:

Molding him to be a trophy wife, not allowing Michael's personality to be in "their house"

Not allowing Michael to be a man on his own terms (paying for things, cashing checks to cover expenses)

Not knowing if David would sacrifice his livelihood if Michael were ever to decide to move out of Pittsburgh

The fact that he was for all intents and purposes willing to date a client....that kind of gets to me

The main thing I wonder is: Had he ever been around Liberty Avenue before Michael? It seems like they just threw him into the story in order to give Michael a love interest. Also, it's unlikely that Michael would've met him if he never even hurt his back. I wonder if that kind of thing happens in real life

What I liked about Ben

He was bookish, smart, always trying to do the right thing.

Knew himself, took life one day at a time

Defended Michael and was up front about his HIV status

What I didn't like about Ben

He was so fixated on being HIV positive that he pushed Michael away

Flaunted his education to Michael, even when Michael was right

Snapping at Michael when he wanted to throw Ben a surprise bday party

Steroids

Comic book envy, though rightly warning Justin and Michael that Brett Keller could botch the spirit of the Comic Book Character

So if I really were to take the two I would say Ben is the stronger of the pair though liked David more, especially since we get to see more about Ben than we get to see David.

My biggest ? is how else would they have met? Michael was more at home in a comic book shop than a college campus and meeting Ben was more or less a fluke, I wonder if they'd have ever seen each other otherwise. My guess is no, as Michael was unlikely to be in the circles that Ben would've been in so that they could actually meet consistently

I'd have seen him better with another person that might have been the opposite of him, educated maybe but a little more down to Earth and having something in common along the lines of comic books.

Just my thoughts
