This film is great, but I hated the shootout scene in the rain. It was beautifully shot, but Rooney's guys just stood there out in the open holding umbrellas while one was taken out after the other. Were these guy's idiots? They had enough time to pull out their guns and fire off 5 to 6 aimed shots each, yet they made no attempt to take cover or whisk Rooney to safety. It was like their legs were cemented to the ground.
I disliked the scene simply because it was too beautiful. In real life the sound of that gun would be echoing around the whole neighbourhood. Blood and fabric would be spraying in all directions. There would be screaming and moaning and gurgling of men as they fell to the ground. What do we get? Silence, except for the deathless score of Mr. Newman. In 'Saving Private Ryan' the audience is hardly ever spared from the grotesque and horrific cacophony of mass murder. Here, it gets ballet.
It's just a hollywood myth that blood and guts go flying out of bullet wounds when people get shot. In reality, bullet wounds, at least for the first few seconds, are pretty clean wounds. It's only later that they start bleeding. Bullets are either hollow point or full metal jacket. FMJ go cleanly through bodies due to their high velocity. The bullet is moving so fast it doesn't bring any blood or guts with it. Hollow points are designed to stop humans, and they accomplish this by expanding and stopping within the body. If they don't come to a complete stop in the body, they bounce around inside the body, shredding apart organs and blood vessels.
So the next time in a movie you see someone get shot with a visible cloud of blood flying out behind them, realize that it's just for special effect. In reality it's quite different.
I didn't say it had to be 'The Shining', I just said it was far too beautiful (and sanitized) than it should have been. But thanks for agreeing with me anyways. Cheers!
