This film is great, but I hated the shootout scene in the rain. It was beautifully shot, but Rooney's guys just stood there out in the open holding umbrellas while one was taken out after the other. Were these guy's idiots? They had enough time to pull out their guns and fire off 5 to 6 aimed shots each, yet they made no attempt to take cover or whisk Rooney to safety. It was like their legs were cemented to the ground.
this movie kicked ass and the shooting umbrella scene is the best part. We don't want to see Sullivan bust through the doors with guns blazing because that would be like every other Hollywood movie that's made. This is Tom Hanks we're talking about...not Bruce Willis, not Sylvester *beep* hanks. We just want to see him humbly sit back and finish off the rest of the gangsters because he is smarter than them. Thats kind of the whole point. That scene was perfect, and if you want to nit pick it, then all you have to say is this. 1. The rain hitting the ground, surrounding cars, and their wool clothing dampened the sound of the Tommy gun and slowed their reactions. 2. They were drunk so their aim/judgment was off. and 3. They were protecting their mob boss, and since he didn't run away it was already too late and they were trying to be a shield. 4. Hanks already proved he was a surgeon with the tommy gun earlier in the film when they killed Mcgovern, so for all you knew he already shot each one in the legs sot hey couldn't run away. Road to Perdition 10/10. Better than titanic, better than Jurassic park, better than Terminator 2. ,
Personally I found this scene to be one of my favorites in the film. Regardless of its suspension of reality in regards to whether or not Rooney's men would take cover; the scene is beautifully shot and acted. The director took artistic license and it paid off, in my opinion.
This is my favorite scene in the movie! He is standing in the shadows and ambushes them. There wasn't very much they could do. The scene is perfectly shot in the rain, and the music is perfect, and it's even a pretty emotional scene when he finally gets to Paul Newman!
I love this film and think it's pretty under-rated.
A lot of people on here are making up some pretty poor excuses to defend the realism of the scene, but being honest those men had plenty of time to run for cover. However, it doesn't really matter too much, as the scene is fantastic.
Watched the youtube video OP linked, and i will have to disagree with his POV, that scene could happen in reality, someone mentioned that these guys where thugs, not really bodyguards, so when you watch the scene, as soon as the first guy goes down, they do what thugs do, they look around for the shooter, once they see where the shots are coming from they start firing, now if you have a thug mentallity you will try to fight back, not run for cover, thats what they did, now people have said why didnt they protect their Boss, well again they where protecting their boss, they where firing back, not just standing still. One last thing Sullivan worked with these men and according to the movie, he was the best, add to the fact he ambushed them, they had no chance.
^^This. They were caught off-guard, they tried taking aim at the shooter when they saw for the shots were coming from but by that time they were too late. Sullivan took them out.

The bodyguards died doing their jobs. They did not "run for cover". They planted their feet, stood there shooting into the darkness. The only thing that gave away Michael Sullivan's location was the muzzle flash of his Thompson machine gun. He was wearing dark clothing standing in the darkness with black automobiles behind him - an almost invisible target. Plus at that distance handheld pistols are terribly inaccurate compared to the longer barrel of a submachine gun.
One could argue if the scene was realistic or not, but from my point of view the scene was great and when i watched it i didn't think "oh my god this is so far-fetched". For me it's one the most beautiful shootout scene ever, very poetic. I had never seen any shootout filmed in such an intense way, like in this flick. The fact that there was no sound, plus the music, plus the rain and the fact that rooney just waited for his certain death made the hole thing pretty brilliant. I have definitely nothing against how the scene was made and I think any other way would have decreased the beauty of it...
