Arguably the *worst* movie in cinema history

Three of Hollywood's softest actors are thrown together into one of the dullest stories in cinema history, playing pseudo-subtle maffiosi. Mob man's family gets killed by his own clan, and the man takes revenge! It's quite fantastic to see Tommy Soft & Serious Hanks playing a tormented maffioso who has to choose between mob loyalty and family (you feel the tension). Add teddy bear Jude Law as a nasty assassin (I couldn't stop laughing), and Paul Newman as the Godfather (can you imagine?), and we have the perfect ingredients for a laugh-kick. Since there is no plot, we must stick to discussing the merits of using perfect-son-in-law actors as gangsters. No workie.

I often wondered whether this movie was intended as a comedy, but the more moralistic the story got, the more I understood that Tom Hanks (the moralist of all moralists) must have had the brilliant idea of using himself to prove that maffiosi do have feelings too.

Besides deserving an Oscar for worst cast in history, I urge technically minded individuals to investigate whether my DVD laserhead simply spinned too sloooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwly, or whether Mendes was actually serious about this wicked tempo. Awful movies often have a reason to be called awful. This one is too empty to have reasons.

There were moments of such astonishing STUPIDITY that I kept wondering whether anyone involved in making this thing had any brains at all. Were they just not paying attention? For example, didn't anyone, at any point, say, "Hey! Why do we have sounds of roaring, crashing ocean surf while we're showing these little waves lapping at the shore?" HOW COULD ANYONE FAIL TO NOTICE THAT?

And what kind of a gun is this professional hitman using that, when he shoots a guy in the face at close range, leaves said guy with a smattering of scratches?

Those are just two of many painfully glaring errors that I noticed when I saw this movie. There were many more, but I don't remember them all. It's been years, and believe me, I have not and will not EVER waste any of my precious time watching this garbage again.

But I do remember the very worst: First, I'll give them credit for portraying, accurately, that nearly all cars at that time were black. (Remember that Ford reportedly said, "They can get whatever color they want as long as it's black"?) So what do these bank robbers, who have law enforcement wanting to arrest them and the mob wanting to kill them, do? They . . . PAINT. THEIR. CAR. BROWN. Brilliant! BRILLIANT! Too bad they couldn't get some neon signs, maybe a loud speaker to announce themselves, a marching band to lead them into town--I mean, why not? They've already made it so that anyone, seeing their car anywhere, will see them coming and immediately know who they are.

Again: How can it be that no one (Producer? Director? Actor? Lackey who brought them coffee?), at any point, said, "Waaaaaiiit a minute here . . . This doesn't make sense"? Sheer stupidity? Stars/bigwigs who were too arrogant to listen? I don't know--but I do know this movie was full of crap like that, and it made it impossible for me to stay "in" the movie while watching it. I don't care how nice it looked, blah blah blah--to me, a great movie is one that keeps me so engrossed that I forget where I am. And this movie was the absolute opposite of that because I was constantly being distracted by such sloppy and--if I haven't already worn this word out--STUPID errors.

You half-wit. He shot the vase in front of Law.

The only "errors" seem to be your glaring inability to understand what the rest of us easily understood.

Was it not a lamp? either way the injuries were caused by the glass, not the bullet. The guy must have been paying too much attention to looking for holes in the plot/production to actually watch the movie, follow the story or appreciate any of the excellent qualities; the acting of the Newman, Hanks, Law and even Craig, the direction, the music and mainly the cinematography.

your post is moronic....you obviously no nothing about movies...i guess the vast majority of critics who liked this movie are wrong....please no more comments until you know what you are talking about shonagun

reply

No bluestriker YOU are moronic and you demonstrate it by rendering the intended "You obviously know nothing about movies." as "you obviously no nothing about movies..." This is a sure sign of a person of low intellect.

Learn to spell, and write in sentences, and you will be more believable.

Yep, hit him where it hurts, his typing/spelling.
Personally I find the practice if using personal attacks in the place of rational argument a far better indication of low intelligence.
I really do get sick of reading this sort of stuff on message boards. So you don't like the film and others do, why does this need to be an argument?

He was the one who made the personal attack. I pointed out the stupidity of the attack.

No.

How could you say it's the worst movie in history? It's one of my all-time favorites.

All lies lead to the truth.

I love this movie, but not because of the strength of the plot or the premise. I enjoy the photography and music more than anything. Conrad Hall is great.
