Arguably the *worst* movie in cinema history

Three of Hollywood's softest actors are thrown together into one of the dullest stories in cinema history, playing pseudo-subtle maffiosi. Mob man's family gets killed by his own clan, and the man takes revenge! It's quite fantastic to see Tommy Soft & Serious Hanks playing a tormented maffioso who has to choose between mob loyalty and family (you feel the tension). Add teddy bear Jude Law as a nasty assassin (I couldn't stop laughing), and Paul Newman as the Godfather (can you imagine?), and we have the perfect ingredients for a laugh-kick. Since there is no plot, we must stick to discussing the merits of using perfect-son-in-law actors as gangsters. No workie.

I often wondered whether this movie was intended as a comedy, but the more moralistic the story got, the more I understood that Tom Hanks (the moralist of all moralists) must have had the brilliant idea of using himself to prove that maffiosi do have feelings too.

Besides deserving an Oscar for worst cast in history, I urge technically minded individuals to investigate whether my DVD laserhead simply spinned too sloooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwly, or whether Mendes was actually serious about this wicked tempo. Awful movies often have a reason to be called awful. This one is too empty to have reasons.

Ok. Arguably the dumbest post I have ever seen.

" Mob man's family gets killed by his own clan, and the man takes revenge! "

The main storyline obviously went straight past your head...

As an experiment, and be honest shonagon53-1, what films DO you like?

You couldn't have said it better, my friend. I hate when people complain about films with otherwise great elements being slow. And yes, I'm a hypocrite. I posted my feelings about the slowness of 2001 but I watched it again and love it. I don't really see how this movie was slow though; it was thoroughly entertaining. I really hope Sam Mendes brings the same elements to the screen again when he directs Bond 23. Oh, I see your from England. Are all Brits smart or all Americans dumb...er?

Okay that was pretty simple humor but, for some reason, it made me laugh out loud. And I have to add that I also vehemently disagree with the OP. If “Road to Perdition” is the worst movie shonagon53-1 has ever seen, then he (or she) has led a charmed life.

I think you all have some from of jealousy, idiocy, absolute stupidity to talk in this way of such an impressive movie. Perhaps one of the greatest movies with Tom Hanks as the protagonist, the scenes, the music, the casting and all features that can concern us stand out in this movie. It will not go in history, that is true, but it cannot be considered a terrible movie. I do not have the time to express my ideas fully but I'm annoyed at reading so many stupid comments to movies that have been better than many others.

I just can't believe how underated this film is... Maybe it will end up like Citizen Kane, people will learn to appreciate the qualities of it in time.

This film is in my all time top 5, some people take this critisism game to seriously, films are supposed to be entertainment, some people should lighten up!

"films are supposed to be entertainment"

Precisely why this film is not in my top 5. It's a good movie, far from being the "worst movie in cinema history" (a thousand other films spring to mind, most notably "The Clone Wars"), but I wouldn't go so far as to call it

Artistically, 'Road to Perdition' is a masterpiece. The cinematography, in particular, is amazing in its detail. But in achieving that perfection of artistry, I felt it lost some of its emotional connection to the audience. In every scene, you can feel that it is the result of meticulous planning and careful thought. Whilst it makes for brilliant camera work, it just lost that bit of the emotional impact for me. Perhaps others felt it- I did not.

It is a good film, though.

A film's quality cannot be judged simply by plot, characters, etc. If this movie was truly awful, the film cuts would be noticeable and jarring, editing mistakes such as quick time jumps during a scene would be visible. This movie managed to fulfill basic production values, such as the audio and picture being synched up. Just because you didn't like it, Shognoagnos etc., doesn't mean it was awful. I felt that the movie drew me in, I enjoyed the framing of many sequences, and I felt like it wasn't ripping off the Godfather, in that it had it's own approach to a mafia story. I thought Tom Hanks grew more convincing as the film progressed, and Jude Law surprised me with an ability to show vehemence.
