Post-Emo?
I'd say Lizzie was pretty emo in this film, writing BS poetry and whatnot; made me want to go listen to a Taking Back Sunday CD.

shareBut what does "emo" mean?
"SCREW SLEEP!" - Heather Langenkamp in A Nightmare on Elm Street
yeah, what is "emo"?
share "emo" means emotional. Music that is conisdered "emo" is music that sounds winey, ie. Bright Eyes, Thrusday, Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance and any other music thats out there nowadays that sounds like crap.

Yeah, but not everything has to be emo. That word makes me sick to my stomach. If anything has negative emotional ties, then everyone thinks it MUST be emo.
Do you know how retarded you sound when you use that word?
this is a true story, thats what people dopnt get, this is the story of a elizabeth wurtzel. she's an amazing writer and why would you wanna categorize herart, thats not your place homie.

i dont think *beep* emos existed in the 80's
525,600 minutes 525,600 moments so dear 525,000 minutes how do u a year
It didn't. and neither did Taking Back Sunday. and i think Lizzie listened to much better music than that Vans Warped crap anyways. Rock -n- Roll is seriouslly going to the pits. Its a sad sad thing.
shareEmo existed in 80`s...it was founded by Washington D.C bands like Rites Of Spring,Embrace and Dag Nasty,Emo is form of Punk music...or should be.
sharecheck out http://www.fourfa.com/ if you want to know more.
sharey the *beep* are u talking bout emo...god any stereotype u can throw out there is here..im serious..we're all stereotyped as one thing...its all made out to be bad things..

Cobain would be considered emo today.
Yay for perspective.
wow you were just.. completely wrong.
to see why, read the thread i posted above this one. it explains.
I have to return some video tapes.
Why is everyone throwing the word 'emo' around?
I don't really truly know or care what emo is.
Plus, have any of you people even listened to My Chemical Romance or Taking Back Sunday or The Used or even Nirvana. All is considered emo, though I just call it music. I like it all and am not ashamed to say it. I don't just listen to it because I'm depressed and blah. It makes me happy. I also listen to Guns n' Roses, The Cure, Johnny Cash, Meatloaf, Frank Sinatra and all that, so don't say I'm just some youngster who has never heard old/good music. Whatever makes me lift my head and listen is good to me.
And true, there are kids out there who just whine and moan all day instead of doing anything, but most of these kids are what I've heard is called 'faux emos' as in not the real thing, who are just trying to be trendy just as everyone is starting to dress like punk rockers from the eighties these days, so I'm not even caring to get into what emo is or what it means.
Plus, emo has nothing to do with this movie. As far as I know, emo is a music/clothing style. She wasn't worrying about clothing or music. She had a mental/emotional problem.

emo is not a form of punk
you *beep* idiot
and "lizzy" was not emo!
Um, hello, Joy Division?
sharethe cure and joy division are not emo...
Emo is pop with power chords with lyrics about how youre girlfriend left you
bands include the following
EX: Blink 182,taking back sunday, from first to last,my chemical romance, good charlotte
No, that is today's skewing of emo culture. Emo did originate in the 80s and it wasn't all about losing your girlfriend, pop style music, guys in girls jeans, eyeliner and weird haircuts. It's an offshoot of punk, which also began in the late seventies/early eighties. Today's emo is a twisted version of its original form.
You're thinking of the scenester culture, which has bastardized emo. It's a pretty common mix up. A lot of people call scenesters "emo" when they don't really understand the difference between the two.
I thought EMO meant Emotional Hardxcore... The music is decent, just don't get it confused with the bands who's members scream like lil girls that had their dollies stolen.
shareIt does mean Emotional/Emotional Hardxcore, though I leave the Hardxcore or xcore stuff up to scenester kids more than real or original emo.
Some people say emo is the ballad of punk rock. ::shrug::
all this scenester emo hardcore talk is really gay, seriously. let's for one minute stop thinking based upon sub-culters who gives a *beep* lots of music is emotional who gives a *beep* yeah boys who wear girl jeans and makeup are stupid and most rock music is terrible now but i can't stand all this scenester talk and people speaking about it like if it really matters it's stupid and it's trendy and music from the 80's like the cure, the smiths, and joy division were emotional and whatnot and fans of them wore tight clothes and makeup or whatever but emo wasn't even a sub-culter back then..who cares this *beep* is stupid and me writing this is pointless k bye.
shareall music is emotional...But the genre itself is crap and should be destroyed.KILL EMO!
shareI agree with that metaphore: a ballad of punk-rock. And even though Emo does come from the word ''emotional'', it is so hard to describe as a genre because all music is (or should be emotional.) Thats the point to making music...You want to communicate feelings through music. I think now the concept of ''emo'' people relates more to how they dress and how they look then to what kind of music they listen to.
shareI think you are getting confused with the new romantic movement, that later became the Goth scene. Emo has nothing to do with these social groups and it has even less to do with Punk. Or would you consider Emo to be New wave?
The main difference between Emo and the Punks, New romantics and Goths is that yeah, they accepted their life and the world was *beep* and they tried to change it productively. Instead of these Emo kids, who just bitch, moan, whine, cry and cause a *beep* of drama for no reason. Goths, Punks and New romantics are realists, Emos are just whiney idiots who cant handle that whats happening to them has happened to billions of people before them.
Defintly agree with jill_henderson666.
But to someone elses comment: I wouldn't say Bright Eyes is emo or indie. (K, so I'm trying to make him my Elliott Smith replacement, is that so bad?)And The Smiths are just fine.
But, is there a point in comparing any 80's music 'labels' with the new crap they call music nowadays?
It's just, times have changed. Take for instance Van Halen. I've loved them since I was a kid, but until about 2 years ago, had no freaking idea they were considered (in the '80s for crying out loud) to be 'metal'. Seriously? I thought they were soft rock (fun, but not, metal).
To me metal is...Ozzy, Pantera, some other band I care nothing about...(I would spew venom here, but I'll refrain).
And the good punk songs were things like 'London calling', not any of the stuff all the Good Charlotte *beep* is that their name?) call punk.
And, do you have any idea how many sub-categories you can come up with?
Indie-Alternative-British-Pop-Rock! Indie-folk-emo-soft rock! lalala!
But yeah, except for a handpicked few, this generation's music sucks.
Big time, mothertruckers!
If I were a drink I'd be a margarita, since I'm tall, salty& I always have tequila in me-Chip Esten
I generally don't stick to band genres...I don't really care WHAT the genre is if I like it.
I don't have a problem with the emo style of music...the attitude, I agree, is not at all good, and has actually hurt the punk movement since they get mushed together since Emo stems from punk. I never said it WAS punk.

Tight pants and complicated haircuts.
The punks of the 80's would bash their phucking heads in.

SHUT THE *beep* UP. Oh my god, what the hell is it with the new generation and this "emo" *beep* It stands for emotional. A movie about a severely depressed girl is going to be nothing but *beep* emotional, okay? Okay.
shareLOL That's the most funny comment i've read! I loved that movie. And I sure love Taking Back Sunday, but I would never had made a connexion between the two. Oh well...!
shareit's so way emo. If emo has to do with emotions the anger you put out in your post is one of those emotions. That makes you, as well as the rest of us, emos.
shareEmo Stands for emotive, originally atleast. All it is is music that provokes emotion.
Now days, however, it seems to stand for people how arn't in pain enough to cross to the goth side. MOST (NOT ALL) emo's today are teenagers with nothing better to do than complain about trivial life issues. Most lack true artistic tallent and are NOT depressed. They are often the ones scratching themselves up for attention and making truely depressed be too afraid to come forward because they may just seen as an attention seeker.
Lizzy is not emo she has a mental disorder. Her poetry and writings are however emotive and therefore truely emo but we can't use that word anymore because true emo has been replaced.
