More movies like this please :)

I am very picky when it comes to movies in general, and horror movies in specific. I spend as much time choosing my watchlist as I spend watching movies themselves :)

The problem is, hardly any movie gives me a scare. The only horror movies I like are "The Others", "The Conjuring", "Occulus" and "The Ring 1". The kind that builds up, and usually features spirits or souls. I hate all the horror movies which depend on gore, screaming and killing. I hated "The Cabin In The Woods", "Psycho" and "Mirrors". I also hate movies featuring serial killers or psychologically disturbed people killing others then calling these movies horror. They do not belong in the horror category, for me at least.

Does anyone have any suggestions ?

Thank you :)

I know what you mean. I prefer supernatural and suspense thrillers without the staple gore that accompanies many "scary" films.

I liked Insidious and to a lesser extent the sequel. The Ring, The Conjuring, The Others, and The Shining are a select few that meet similar criteria and I'm always on the lookout for more.

Event Horizon is my main exception to the "gore factor" scare. The film is chilling and effected me like no other a few years back. It doesn't quite hold that same level of power for me anymore, though it was an unforgettable experience.

Also, while not scary to me in the least, The Cell offers a very disturbingly beautiful visual representation of psychosis. It feels like a dark precursor to the astounding work done in The Fountain.

In closing, a notable mention is Stephen King's It, that little "miniseries" of a film was fantastic...until the last 15 minutes, but still!

Here are some good horror movies you might like if you liked the Others:

The Amityville Horror (1979)
The Shining
The Exorcist (1973)
Suspira
Rosemary's Baby
Don't Look Now
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

All great suggestions. My vote is for Rosemary's Baby, gradual suspense with barely any blood.

The Orphanage AKA El orfanato - very similar premise

I wouldn't really connect this movie to it but I wonder if you would enjoy 1408?

It's hard for me to find good horror movies, too, and this is one of the very few that I've found that I've enjoyed, also. Along with 1408, and also Thir13en Ghosts (mostly due to nostalgia though, i wouldn't really consider this movie majorly scary, but the ghosts make-up and the effects are impressive).

I am of similar mind to you when it comes to "horror" films; my personal favourite is "The Haunting", and I'm not talking about the appalling 1999 remake, but the superior 1963 Robert Wise classic.

Some would categorise this as more terrifying than horrific, as it is mostly just relies on playing merry hell with your mind, while visually there is hardly anything graphic or bloody.

But definitely a worthy film to add to your list.

...but what I know about is Texas; and down here, you're on your own!

The Haunting is a classic. While it seemed Hill House was indeed haunted, you were never sure how much was in Eleanor's mind?

I agree! Once of my favorite movies and we watch it every year at Halloween. The ending has such a twist that I never saw coming so re-watching will never recreate the surprise I had when I first saw it but I still love it. The ending reminds me of other movies like: 6th Sense and The Village. All have surprising twists at the end. 1408 is close but it depends on which ending you saw- there are 3.

Anyway, great movie!

The Legend of Hell House

It's funny, I don't really consider this movie to be horror as it's mostly just an emotionally intense movie. It reminded me of the Sixth Sense a lot in that way.

The other movie this really reminded me of is The Innocents (1961). That movie also features the whole "big creepy English house with ghosts only the kids see" plotline, except much creepier since that movie is full blown horror.

Also, not a movie, but season one of American Horror Story heavily borrows from the plot of this movie. However, it's pretty ridiculous, violent and over the top so I'm not sure if you'd like it.
