It was believed (and sadly still today) that a boy became a man through sex.
"Suddenly being better is being pretentious.."
[deleted]
Correct.
For me it's one of the great film stories for that reason.
And a good reason to legalize it everywhere but especially
where it is way underground in Prudetown, USA.
The book "Harmful To Minors" by Judith Levine scandalized a lot of people
when it came out. Nowadays I note that it is available in 43
libraries here.
But Levine doesn't touch on the father's duties to his son
in these terms. For that, the book is left wanting but is still
a good read for one and all.
He had come to accept that the boys sexuality wasn't "evil," but just a natural maturity. The mother didn't accept it, hence the attemped exorcism.
If you love Jesus Christ and are 100% proud of it copy this and make your signature!
yea because sex is part of becoming a man. so hastely is because the father maybe feared they could die tomorrow in another bombing. his son not dying a virgin was probably on his mind. but they also made it seem that he needed it. so who knows why he was taken there.
share"thats because its true!"
As stated before by myself...it sadly is believed today that a boy becomes a man through sex...and by that act alone.
I disagree entirely.
Does a girl become a woman in the same way?
Is this how all children become adults?
"Suddenly being better is being pretentious.."
[deleted]
Yes, sore considering I've had a child in the past year :D
And didn't you know that growth lies far beyond sexuality?
...perhaps not.
You don't become a woman by having sex.
A thirteen year-old girl has sex, possibly gets pregnant...*poof*...by your standards, she is a woman now; ready to fight the big bad world all on her own.
"Suddenly being better is being pretentious.."
[deleted]
depends who you have sex with =D

People just need to get laid that's all. Not neccessarily to become a man or woman, the son's got a lot of sex built up in his mind. I wish my dad was cool enough to buy me a whore. We all need to get laid more, some people are wound up too tight.

My kind of dad.
I wonder if Borat grew up that way
It's a pretty grim world when I can't even feel superior to a toddler

I really believe that having sex is a major part of being an adult.
And, as an European, you must know that we aren't so restrictive about sex, and that many people actually aprove sex after a boy or girl turns 14 (not that much with girls...). I believe sex is a normal part of your life, and should not be considered as a hedious act, as you seem to discretely say.
I do not approve sex between men and children, and I don't approve sex before adolescence, but as the teenager reaches that point, I think it is perfectly normal and natural that he feels interest for that practise, and that brings him not to fully manhood but to a perception of what it will be.
Because a culture believes in responsible and non $$exploitive sex does not mean they think sex is "hedious" or "abnormal". THE REVERSE IS TRUE.
Are all Europeans this clueless?
By the way, having sex won't transform you into an adult.

I'm not American & I agree with Mary.

Apparently, a lot of men used to do that "in the old days," so that their little boy would know what to do whenever they got married.
I had a coworker a few years ago who told me that his dad took him to a house of ill repute in Juarez, Mexico when he turned 15. I told him that was really gross, and too much information, but he said that it helped him lose his nervousness when he got older and got serious with his first girlfriend.
I still think that's gross, but I'm entitled to my opinion.
El Paso, Texas...ever heard of it?
Would your friend have approved of a litany of men losing their "nervousness" with his sisters?
Or is it only O.K. as long as it's somebody else's sisters or mother?
1st im not a christian
when i read bibble i understand why they think like that
this movie is good
but director made alot of sex scenes
& i think that this scene is put in the movie just to make us bemoan
13 yrs old with one of the hotties woman in cenima history
this scene is usless but it make us bemoan

Ultimately, if you thought your son could die in a bomb attack at any moment, there are worse things you could do.
shareUnless your're the whore's mother, father, or brother.
Ultimately--there ARE better things men can do with their time.

Buying your son sex is NOT teaching, if you cant understand thats what shes trying to say youre insane. Its not just a movie this happens in real life even today.
shareYou think she's obsessed because she's replying on a thread on a message board? So replying to other threads, ie. Monica's bush is ok, but Mary replying to this is a no no? It's very hypocritical IMO, you have 2 rules for everyone, 1 is your way with no boundaries & another is for everyone else that ruffles your feathers.

"Why does he do that?"
I wish my dad would've done that lol
Your obviously not Italian, so you would never understand!
shareMy dad took me to a prostitute when I turned 18 and that was 1998. It's the culture.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94fZZ879xj0
...And you saw and still see nothing wrong with it? The fact that your dad is involved in the first place is disturbing.
shareDid I say nothing was wrong with it? No, there's a lot wrong with it. All I said is it's the culture and it'll never change. Besides, I'm gay, so imagine my *beep* horror at being forced to be with a woman. Of course this was unknown to dad at the time and had nothing to do with my being there. It was a right of passage all young men our age went through in my family.

Cultures do change believe it or not.
share[deleted]
Nothing ive said implies in the least that im a "prude", nor am i religious. Try again
share[deleted]
Sorry, but being against prostitution is completely normal, what planet are you from?
share[deleted]
Yes someone with the name gloosniffer MUST be a religious fanatic. Wrong fool, i couldnt be further from it. Its called common sense
Would you take your daughter to go *beep* some guy? No? Wow how surprising..
Would you take your lesbian daughter to a whorehouse?
How bout stay out of your kids sex lives because its none of your business. And just for the record, ANYONE who buys sex is a pathetic piece of s*hit, influencing your kids to be idiots as well just puts the icing on the cake
Having certain ideals & moral beliefs makes one a prude or a religious zealot now? I don't think you even realize how uneducated, crude & ignorant you are, you're like the common man, a borg drone with no personality or character to speak of. Big Brother just has to point to you what to eat, say or sh!t, & you'd gladly do it, blissfully even.

& your bigotry, prejudice & intolerance of people makes you no different from these people of the past. You have no respect for your fellow human beings & all you promote & cherish is the same intolerance as these witch hunters. I'm glad I come from a society enlightened enough to have the wisdom in recognizing humility & respect instead of condescension, crudeness, barbarity & arrogance you & your forefathers seem to cherish out of the very same impotent ideals & moral beliefs you like to tout so much.
It's why you worship invisible space gods.

I hate to interrupt this fine thread with something on topic but did anyone else think that his whorehouse experience was as imaginary as Malena showing up at his bedroom door in the middle of the night? I was either on to something or awfully confused in this movie... It seems most of the things happened were in his imagination. Have you ever been so obsessed with something/someone it seems as if every life experience is in relation to what you're obsessed with? That's how the boy was. That looked like a pretty big town, I don't think Malena would have been the talk of the town the way she was portrayed in the movie. I don't think people tripped and fell over themselves to get a glimpse of her every time she was out. I don't think the barbershop was full of gossip about her. Maybe a few errant comments about her but the boy imagined as if everyone was as in love with her as he was. There's no way she had 20 people try to light her cigarette, that is just what the boy perceived, fools tripping over themselves because he was in love with her and thought everyone else was as obsessed. The whorehouse, as much a figment of his imagination as Malena showing up at his bedroom door. Another reason I don't believe it real, that was at the time Malena had blonde hair, but in his fantasy she looked just as she did when the boy first saw her. The whole movie was told through the perspective of the young boy, and any time Malena was walking through the town, the director made sure to only show us what the boy was seeing. He would pedal fast from scene to scene and what he envisioned happening, as I took it, was more fantastical than reality.
So I present to you my theory.... It didn't really happen.
I would love to hear your thoughts (or I could droll through this terrible f'ing thread and read who is and isn't repressive in thought, the moral conciousness of western opinions, and other people's viewpoints on their high horses. God, seriously? Most all who opened their mouths in this thread, I see a pattern. You are enlightened and know more than the next person, (groan). And I just have to say to that person speaking about how lucky they are to grow up in a socially conscious society and lashing out against "western thought" and lynching people and everything else (you're not worth my time to go back and look your name up, you've already wasted enough of my time with your trite off topic viewpoints). I would like to say you are the epitome of annoying, congratulations.
