Falzone Salv, I strongly recommend these films:

Highway (with Jared Leto and Jake Gyllenhaal)

Also two David Lynch classics:

Lost Highway
Wild at Heart

U-Turn with Sean Penn, Billy Bob Thorton, and for some reason Jennifer Lopez who really doesn't make the movie worse (except her accent). The best part is the role of Billy Bob Thorton as a dirty mechanic. One of the most memorable characters ever. I also love Sean Penn's 1964 and a half Mustang that plays a major character also.

Breakdown with Kurt Russell

Duel (the movie with the evil truck)

Also If...Dog...Rabbit (also known as One Last Score) is amazing but you probably won't find it anywhere to rent

Wild at Heart is my favorite of these chosen. Lost Highway and U-Turn are tied in second with Breakdown, Highway, Duel, and If... Dog...Rabbit tied in third. The song Wicked Game by Chris Isaak in Wild at Heart changed my life. If you don't see any of these movies you have to download this song somewhere. The best track for an open road through the desert.

Well, this isn't exactly the same 'style' as this film, but the first title that came to mind when I tried to think of one was Dream With The Fishes, with David Arquette. I haven't seen it in many years but I recall it having some of the aforementioned attributes.

i'd like to recommend Box Of Moonlight with John Turturo and Sam Rockwell...

that whole movie happens because John Turturo doesn't feel like going back home when his job in construction ends early so he decides to rent a car and he just drives around the town running into various local oddballs...eventually he runs into this free-spirit living in literally half a house (there's the exterior of a house and that's it!) and eating mashed up hydrox cookies for breakfast the two of them end up camping out for the weekend...and not really doing much of anything but Turturo learns to just be...and not be so hung up on all the small details of everything...its a great movie and i think very very much along the lines of what you're looking for. (its also about just wanting to be and not having to follow any particular path) its got a great quirky sense of humor i think. at one point they run into all these locals who think they see jesus on a hamburger billborad and neither one of them can see it...Rockwell says "damn it i always just miss those things." its just such a good, and very unpredictable movie...you really never know where they're quite headed... anyway that's my two cents. (also the title refers to this box that Rockwell keeps bringing with him everywhere he goes...he keeps saying don't open it you'll let the moonlight out man.)

Its Not Where You End Up that matters as much as how you get there--Al Fountain

Life is a tomato fresh on the vine.--Al Fountain
(those are both quotes from Turturo's character in the movie---he keeps talking to himself trying to coin phrases in a tape recorder.)

Highway with Jared Leto and Jake Gylenhaal is a great movie!I saw it a while ago and loved it...
The other ones I havent seen...I've heard of Lost Highway, but I'm not really Lynch's biggest fan(expect for The Elephan Man, wich I liked) so I never had much interest in seeing it..Is it a "normal" road trip movie, or a "Lynch" road trip movie, if you know what I mean, kind of like Mullholand Dr.?

reply

oh its definitely a lynch movie... halfway through the movie bill pullman's character (who had been the main character up to that point) gets put in jail overnight...and when the guards come in the morning to check him out...he's literally turned into a completely different person...who the film then spends the rest of the running time following (its not like he is bill pullman's character...he is literally a completely different person...with a different backstory..he's got a different job, different life, different set of characters, different storyline...only similarity is that patricia arquette turns up in both mens' lives) at least till the end of the movie when he's driving down the highway and turns back into bill pullman during a lightning storm..errrr i think...
anyways to make a rambling answer short...its definitely a david lynch movie....

but there was a movie directed by David Lynch now that i think about it that is a very, very normal one called The Straight Story...which is in fact a road movie...its about a farmer who travels 600 miles or so across country in a tractor to visit his dying brother...its actually a very straight foward road movie...no tricks, no becoming different character, nothing of that sort...pretty sweet movie if a little slow in spots.

Can i please recommend Box Of Moonlight again...that is an awesome road trip movie!!!! very much in the vein of interstate 60 i would say.

Waking Life is pretty much the same exact movie in the sens its about a young man trying to find himself and questioning the meaning of life, while in a dream sequence meeting out of the ordinary, intelligent people. Waking Life is amazing, but a little more complicated, toughr vocabulary and a little more confusing. Both movies have very interesting dialogues, and I think if you enjoyed thinking about what this movie was stating, you'd really enjoy Waking Life.
