How old were you when you first saw this film?

I was 13. Though I was quite a young 13 (child-like, whereas other girls in my school were more teenagery), I was immediately captured and mystified. I began to keep a diary and made it look '70s', decorating it with old pictures and cigarette cards, and filling it with all kinds of embarrassing 'why are we all here?' crap.

Anyway – the first viewing of this film marks a time where I became more interested in film, pop culture and general growing up (the theme of suicide was not my personal main focus), and now as an adult I'm wondering if anyone had a similar 'growing up' experience, with this or any other movie? I doubt it would have had the same impact on me if I’d first watched it at 22 instead. Sometimes it's as if with films, books and even songs, the age you are when you encounter them means just as much as the sentiment within the thing itself.

I hope this post is more coherant than I feel right now.

I read the book yesterday night and watched the movie right after.
I'm 16 now and although my life is nothing like those of the Lisbon girls', I felt that I knew a lot of what they were feeling, having considered such options myself.
Not because of the typical teenage angst either, before you pass me off as one of those whiny adolescents who have no idea how good they have it.

I first saw it when I was about 15 (I'm 20 now). It didn't leave too great an impression at first, but I loved the score and couldn't get Playground Love out of my head for weeks. I watched it a few more times after that and it grew on me since I do have a penchant for angst-ridden period pieces. That said, it's not an especially compelling film. It's 'comfort food' cinema.

I was ten or eleven and I was completely in love with it. Possibly because I wasn't allowed to watch R rated movies and I had to watch on HBO after my parents went to bed.

16. I just finished watching it for the first time. It was an ok film to me, it didn't captivate me particularly but was pretty well done overall. I read the book a couple months ago and thought it was good but nothing special too. I think I prefer the book to the movie though. Some of the book's description just didn't translate to screen.

So I guess you can say I don't get the hype?

I just finished watching it about two hours ago. I really enjoyed it, will probably buy it on DVD and I'm thinking of looking up/buying the book on Amazon BUT I didn't really connect to it. I connected more to the film 'Thirteen'.

It’s immortality, my darlings
