Who is the girl???

This has been bugging me, i've watched the ninth gate but i don't get who the girl is. i wondered if she was the whore of babylon or something cos she was with some beast on the picture, like in the book of revelations. is she a demon? i'm so confused. it's quite obvious that she isn't human. and where does the ninth gate lead to? heaven? hell? I remember someone mentioning hell on the boards but why would any human voluntarily go to hell?

I am Jack's complete lack of surprise

reply

The girl is the engravings guardian, waiting for Corso to help him at this precise moment in time (1999). Everyone else is just characters in the engravings, carrying out their destiny.

The engravings are a prophecy written by Torchia and LCF (1666). They are not a puzzle, they show what is going to happen and are a map for Corso to follow.

At the right time the girl gets Balkan to hire Corso and then she helps him all the way to the nith gate.

Is Corso LCF? I think so, but the nith gate seems to leed to a world of light so Polansky is obviosly playing with religion here.

Everything you know is a lie...

reply

So basically there is no right answer with the ninth gate. It's open to interpretation? i assume so as there are so many conflicting opinions here

reply

The irretating thing is that I think there is a right answer. Its Polanskys universe, so I dont think we will find it in the standard biblical doctrine.

There are so many hidden clues that its hard to know what view of the world he is showing us. Maby we should do a listing of all the clues we find and se what it leads to.

Clue 1. The Title sequense shows the actuall nine gates that Corso passes in the movie.

Clue 2. Old man Telfer hangs himself and sets the game in motion.

...

Clue 667. Corso enters the ninth gate, a world of light... or is it just the sun rising?

reply

The special features on the DVD has a spiel by polanski (director).
He mentions that she is an emissary of the devil.

She also has a pentacle tattoo above her left hip. This picture appears on the region 4 movie slick (though it wasn't in the movie).

The Girl is Emmanuelle Seigner, she got married to Polanski!

reply

Interesting, she would be some kind of witch or demon then.
Maby he sectretly hates his wife...

Another clue that could point to Corso being the devil is if you use factor nine on the alphabet and his name, D Corso.

d=36 c=27 o=135 r=162 s=171 o=135 gives sum=666

Hmm... maby I should stop thinking about this...

Try using it on Lucifer and Jesus...

reply

i am clueless. alot of people think she is not the devil. i do. if you own the movie on dvd look at the front cover where it says "the only thing more terrifying than searching for the devil...is fnding him". now on the back look where it says "johnny depp goes head to head with lucifer in roman polanski's new thriller". now read the plot of the movie on the back as well. read where it says "corso becomes embroiled in a conspiracy involving murder, theft, and satanic ritual, and ultimately finds himself confronting the devil incarnate. DOES THAT MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU? I GUESS THE DEVIL INCARNATE WAS THE GREEN EYED WOMAN. WHAT I PERCEPTED WAS THE FOLLOWING:BALKAN SUCCEEDED IN SUMMONING LUCIFER OR SATAN DEVIL ETC..THE DEVIL NOTICED HIM BUT HE NEVER NOTICED THE DEVIL.CORSO ON THE OTHER HAND NOTICED SOMETHING ODD ABOUT THE BLONDE. I THINK THAT CORSO WAS CHOSEN BY SATAN. HE HAD MANY CHANCES TO STOP TRYING TO AUTHENTICATE THIS RARE BOOK BUT NEVER DID. HE HAD DESIRE.LIKE A PASSAGE FROM THE BOOK SAID" SILENCE IS GOLDEN" HE NEVER GAVE OTHERS INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTOR OR ANYTHING. HE HAD LOYALTY TOWARDS EVIL.NOTICE THE PASSAGES FROM THE BOOK IN THE BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE,ICANT REMEMBER ALL OF THEM BUT NOTICE THEM AND YO WILL SEE CORSO ABIDES ALL OF THEM.BESIDES FROM THIS HE WAS VERY UNSCRUPULOUS, NEVER CARED FOR OTHERS,AND WAS A DOUBLE DEALING SLEAZE BALL. THE GUY HAD CASH SIGNS ON HIS EYEBALLS. SATAN TOOK INTEREST IN THIS AND GUIDED HIM TO THE NINTH GATE. BEFORE HE ENETERD THE NINTH GATE HE HAD GONE THROUGH ALL THE OTHER GATES. HE EXPERIENCED EVERYTHING THAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE BOOK.TRY TO NOTICE THE ENGRAVINGS AND YOU WILL SEE HE WENT THROUGH ALL OF THEM. THE QUESTION I ASKED MYSELF? WHY WOULD SOMEONE VOLUNTARILY GO TO HELL? MAYBE IT WASNT HELL. MAYBE HE WAS PUT TO THE TEST BY LUCIFER AND PASSED,HE WAS WORTHY SO HIS PRIZE IS A NICE VIP ROOM IN HELL ALONG WITH ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE AND NOT HUMANLIKE ABILITIES. I HOPE THIS WAS HELPFUL..REMEMBER THIS IS MY OPINION AND ITS WHAT I PERCEPTED.I MIGHT BE TOTALLY CORRECT OR COMPLETELY WRONG..PERHAPS I WILL WATCH IT MORE TIMES AND SEE WHAT I UNDERSTAND?

Ok dude 1st all caps was soo not nessary.Look here is what it is, and take notice the normal font; ok, the girl is lets say 'lucifer's helper' notice every time Depp is in mortal danger she stops it.Or when he messes with the actions that need to take place like Balkin killing that woman (because both had to die,1 way or the other)and you notice a gleam of pride in her eyes when he kills that guy that was leading them down the stairwell. Now her being Depp's 'Gaurdian Devil' and all through out the entire movie seems to escape many people,I don't know why.The entire movie as a whole is this. The plight of a man (Corrso) who will take his rightfull place as Devil on earth etc... ect... blah blah blah.I mean I Loved this movie, i Love Polanski, It took me 2 veiwings to figure it out(Ill be it the first was interupted several times) so there you go thats it thats all. 9/10

reply

In the end of the movie he passes through the ninth gate and meets the devil. That was the clearly stated goal of going through the ninth gate throughout the whole movie.

I stopped reading your post after the first few words in caps BTW. Few people will ever sympathize with you when you do that. Nobody likes to be yelled at.

The girl is Sophia, the feminine principle of the universe.Remember that at the beginning we see an image of a serpent coiled in the tree of knowledge. In the past ,the serpent simbolized wisdom,of a secret and sexual nature. The knowledge we are referring to is called GNOSIS.It is the personal quest for the mystical union with The Divine. All ancient religions worshipped the serpent and the feminine principle, which was,and it still is,considered the essence of evil,by Chistianity.

In the movie Polanksi changes the purpose of the girl. I think honestly just to confuse the audience that had read The Club Duams. In the book the girl is good no weirdness about her, she looks after him entirely. Beats up on anyone that tries to hurt him, doesn't stop him when Borja wants to open the gate. When Borja is the one that tries to open the gate, he actually changes one of the plates (pages) so he can't open the gate. In the end Corso walks back to the girl and they drive off together.

In the movie it's not that simple. The girl is there, but doesn't serve the same purpose. At the end of the movie I always got the impression that after finding all nine of the original plates he opens the gate to hell himself and the girl infleuences him in opening the gate. The exact opposite of what Reverte did in the book. Which would be amazing for anyone that had read the book and then went to go see the movie. Having the exact opposite of what happens in the book. It's interesting.

She's an angel in the book, a demon in the movie.

How many times do I have to say this. Stop reading modern fiction and quoting it as fact. Most religions are, in fact, male dominated and the primary deities of most anceint cultures were masculine or gender nonspecific (not the word I wanted to use but couldn't come up with it). The female dominated religions were the exception to the rule.

Marduk was the principal god of Babylon. He was male.
The greek pantheon was predominantly male with Zeus being theleader.
The Norse pantheon was predominantly male with Oden benig the leader.
The Egyptian pantheon was predominantly male with Osiris being the leader.
The Cartheginian god Ba'al was male.
The vast majority of Hindu gods were male with Shiva being the most important.
Did I mention that he was male?

This goes on and on forever. Sophia, Mithra and the like are the rare exceptions. Also, Sophia is a Gnostic deity, which lies on the extreme outside of Christian myth. If not for Dan Brown almost no one in the western world, outside of religious scholars, would ever have know about them.

Please stop quoting, and I'm not just refering to melquiaquino, works of fiction as hard historical fact. About half of the Di Vinci Code is either fabrication or pulled from arcane and/or bizarre sources.

reply

kpryde, you seem to have a lot to say, yet i have no idea who you are talking to, are all your comments to the same person? and though my knowledge of egyptian mythology is extremely rusty, wouldn't Ra (or Amun-Ra) be considered the leader of the egyptian pantheon? maybe Horus? the sun god seems more likely to be considered the leader then a god of the dead and a judge for the afterlife.

I, When in good humor, Give grass its green, Blazon sky blue, and endow the sun with gold

reply

Erm.. just to jump in here, Ra (or Amun-Ra) was a sun god who was introduced to Egypt by Tutankhamun's father (sorry I forget his name)in an attempt to bring monotheism to the people. Prior to this it was Osiris who was the head of the pantheon although his wife was pretty highly regarded as she found all of his body parts after he was betrayed and dismembered by his brother, then brought him back to life. Allegedly.
The comment about who would be most likley must be considered from the POV of the ancient egyptians who held death and the afterlife in higher regard than the sun.

Is that your opinion or do you have any citations to support?

Who'll dare tread upon the tail of my coat?

reply

This will sound slightly lame but I am going to have to come back to you on that, I know that before Tutankhamun's dad Osiris was the 'head' of the Egyptian pantheon and that the said Pharoah was responsable for the change around including building the city-temple at Karnak - I will dig up my references on that one.

As to the idea of Death and the Afterlife holding a higher place in Egypt than the sun; to be fair that is my interpretation based on the apparent preoccupation with such things, if I wasn't at work and therefore cramming this in between other *beep* I would spend the time to look up names and citations, but I will be back ;)

Addenum: OK I have checked a couple of things, and all I can say is that my memory for names is beyond terrible.
Tutankhamuns dad was called Akhenaten, he tried to convert the Egyptians to monotheistic worship of Aten who was a reinterpretation of the sun god Amun-Ra.

"I distort my perceptions to make my reality more palatable"

reply

No. Akhenaten worshipped the 'Aten' who had nothing to do with Amun-Ra and the rest of the Egyptian Gods.

Originally Tut was named Tut-Ankh-Aten and it was only changed to Tut-Ankh-Amun after Akhenaten was overthrown by the Priesthood and Tut was installed as the Pharaoh and Egypt went back to the old polytheism system.

Well, I see this conversation has been going on for some time.

I just finished the movie for the first time today and loved it. Anyway, what I got from the film was this: the girl, the albino, and the Baroness' secretary were all witch's familiars. The only problem I have with this theory is figuring out who's familar the girl was. I'm assuming she was Balkan's but I'm not 100% on that.

This is a question to an earlier post regarding Jewish religion. Someone claimed that the Devil did not exist in Jewish thought:

So there's no satan in Judaism? What about all the references to the "Adversary" in the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible)? And what about the Snake that tempted Adam and Eve? What beings are those? Moses didn't mean a real snake I'm sure. And Beelzebub?

reply

so let me see if i get this straight? God created earth, he also created the archangel micheal and (something) satan, sammael, lucifer whatever you want to call him... he is above all that and he has put 2 opposites to rule for him. whats the problem? weve solved it! yay!

reply

In Judaism, "ha-satan" -- in Hebrew, "the adversary" or "the accuser" -- is a supernatural agent of God who is commissioned to patrol the Earth, test people's faith, and punish bad behavior. Ha-satan takes no initiatives of his own. He works solely at the discretion and command of God. He has nothing to do with the serpent in the Garden of Eden or the Christian figures Satan, Lucifer, Beelzebub, or any of the religion's other spooky bad guys.

There is no god of evil -- or whatever one calls Christianity's Devil -- in Judaism. God is the creator and ruler of all things in the Jewish faith, including evil.

The girl is an emissary of Satan. Satan didn't want Balkan or any of the others because Satan's biggest joy is corruption. Better to make a man want to complete the ritual than to let someone who already wants to do it. You'll get the believer's soul anyway, but converting someone to belief is that much sweeter.

I throughly love this tale, both book and movie. To be honest, the "girl" is hinted to be Lucifer (or at least a fallen angel) in the book, Reverte's "The Club Dumas". In the movie, she is more symbolically Lucifer and the alternative of God, or even God. That's what's important about the sex scene at the end: Corso (man) is at one with Divinity.

Hmm, in looking back over this thread I read from a few comments some subtle attacks on observations and opinions. Messageboards online are wont to provide means to those who enjoy anomiminity to mask themselves while they lambaste others with their own limited reasons.

One individual writes that he has something better to do than read esoterical comments from uneducated or unenlightened viewers. Regardless, no one here knows exactly anyone else whom reports on these threads; therefore it is inappropriate to make such ascertations based upon prejudice or limited viewpoints.

My humble advice is to merely disregard any comment that may not agree with yours without making such opinions. Some individuals (as myself) enjoy analyzing art in all of its aspects, whether or not the medium is worthy of it. Most of the time, it appears, attacking another individual in such a way illuminates one's own limited education or aesthetic appreciation. :)

reply

God damn, it took me 3 hours to read the thread.
Anyway, i think the chick is lucifer.
When Corso was talking to the twins he asked them what LCF means. They said "guess".
Later when he met the girl in the train he asked for her name and she told him "guess".

Also think about that Dodge Viper. Snake...

And she always asked him what HE wanted to do. She never told him directly to do anything.
That student thing could mean she was studying humans. Manipulating and things like that.

I just don't get the last picture. Did that mean that corso will become a beast? The antichrist maybe? Or will she become pregnant and give birth to the antichrist?
Or maybe she was....HIS SISTER(tam tam taam!), like in "the devil's advocate" :)

By the way, some people really OVERANALIZE. Just look at the movie and what clues it gave you. Not what the bible or some vague mithology says. ONLY EXAMINE WHAT THE MOVIE GIVES YOU and it will be a lot easier.

reply

Anyway, i think the chick is lucifer.
She's not Lucifer, she's the woman riding the three headed beast in the last engraving -- a riff on the Whore of Babylon. In the engraving, she rides a seven-headed beast; in the Bible and traditional Christian art, she rides a seven-headed beast. In both the movie and (often) in traditional Christian art, she is seen riding the beast before a great castle.

In the movie, this is the real-life castle of the Church-persecuted gnostic sect known as the Cathars. (Technically, is the fourteenth century rebuild of their castle, as theirs was destroyed.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catharism
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnosticism

The film blends gnosticism with the Luciferian belief that Lucifer, the "light bearer," is a benevolent liberator -- a being of enlightenment and individualism -- not a malevolent entity. What Corso walks into at the end of the film is the light of Lucifer, of knowledge and personal transcendence.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luciferianism

That's how I read the film, at least. It has to be divorced from the traditional Christian view of Lucifer to be properly understood, I think. The film is anything but Christian.

Here's a decent (I disagree with some of it -- he doesn't know much, if anything, about Luciferianism, I don't think) interpretation of the movie.
Symbolism in "The Ninth Gate"
http://slapphappe.wordpress.com/2009/03/22/symbolism-in-the-ninth-gate /
NB: Spolier alert! See the movie first if you don’t want to know the outcome. I’m writing this review, however, for people who may otherwise be disappointed in the movie’s ending — which is better appreciated when you decipher some of the symbolism upon which it is built and have time to study the book’s engravings.

The movie “The Ninth Gate” is based on a Spanish work of fiction “The Club Dumas” by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. In it the protagonists, Balkan and Corso, respectively search and research a fictional book called “The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows”. The searcher is material and acquisitive — he knows what he wants and he goes after it. The researchers seeks knowledge, doesn’t know what the outcome will be and that is his reward. Both are embarking upon a journey, with very different outcomes, one of destruction by fire and the other of enlightenment. Keep your focus on Corso, this is his story, only he passes through the ninth gate. Corso himself doesn’t seem to realise this until the end. Decide for yourself what the role of Corso’s companion is: Is she heaven sent or come straight from hell? Could she represent the whore of Babylon symbolising a false religion and is the burning of the castle at the end a reference to the downfall of Jerusalem?

whore-of-baylon-1destruction-of-jerusalemcastle-of-puivert

Caption: The Whore of Babylon, The Destruction of Jerusalem and the Castle of Puivert. The Ninth Gate references real historical books, characters, places and events to weave credibility and intrigue into it’s plot and leaves it sufficiently open-ended to encourage debate and further research. That’s probably what brings you here, right?

This is a story about two parallel lives going in opposite directions. I’ll refer to the movie, which I have seen, not the book, which I have not read. There are likely to be differences.

For Balkan, the journey is downwards, as he tries to summon up the power of the devil: He descends into the Kingdom of Shadows. The fire at the Ninth Gate (of the forged image) is Balkan’s destruction.

For Corso the journey is upwards: He emerges from Kingdom of Shadows. The light at the Ninth Gate (of the real image) reveals that it casts shadows upon this world — and for the worthy the journey is out of the Kingdom of Shadows. The light at the end is Corso’s enlightenment.

Three variations of an ancient book “The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows” exist. Each book contains nine engravings. Three different engravings in each of the three books are signed LCF for Lucifer. Six are signed AT for Aristidem Torchiam, the fictional book’s author. One engraving signed LCF is a forgery. The nine LCF engravings plot the path into or out of the Kingdom of Shadows. The differences in the symbology of the AT and LCF images decode the underlying story.

In Latin the word “Lucifer” means “Light-Bringer” and references the morning star which has become associated with satan. You must try to figure out whose light is actually shining here and who lives in the shadows: Is is god or is it satan? You could make a convincing case for either — which, I think, is a dilemma of duality deliberately intended by the author.

There are strong Kabalistic and Tarot references throughout the engravings of the nine gates. There’s minutia in each to delight the souls of researches, from Hebrew letters, Roman numerals through biblical references. I’ll simply stick to the dominant themes which advance the story well enough.

The 1st Gate: A knight on horseback holds a finger to his lips signaling silence or secrecy. The latin caption in the film translates to “Silence is golden”. In the book, however, the literal translation of the caption is given as “No one attains who unlawfully contends” or “Only he who has fought according to the rules will succeed”. The book’s caption offers a better hint at the outcome. The film trades on secrets and prefers to remain silent about the real journey — thereby robbing most who watch it of the true meaning at the end.

AT: The knight sees a castle with four towers.
LCF: The knight sees a castle with three towers (pictured here).

The castle in the distance is the destination. The number four symbolises the material world (four seasons, four points of the compass, earth/wind/fire/water etc.). The number three represents perfection (e.g. trinity and the divine triangle). The goal for one will be material for the other it will be spiritual.

The 2nd Gate: A hermit looking bearded man with a pair of keys in his hand stands at door, with a knocker, latched closed. He is accompanied by a dog, with the Hebrew symbol for nine behind him and a burning lantern at his feet. The latin caption translates to “Open that which is closed”.

AT: The man holds keys in his right hand.
LCF: The man holds keys in his left hand (pictured here).

A pair of keys in symbology are often gold and silver. Both reflecting a different light, one of emotional warmth and wealth, the other of spiritual purity and enlightenment. The right hand represents the familiar material world, the left hand represents the unconscious or unknown world. Sinister means left and describes how many thought of left handed people: A misunderstanding of the unknown. His companion might be the right reading ‘dog’ or the inverted left reading ‘god”. One journeyman will see things from the left (spiritual), the other will see things from the right (material). One will open spiritual doors another will open doors to material things. There’s a strong message of duality here.

The 3rd Gate: Captioned “The lost word keeps the secret”, a pilgrim on his path encounters towered bridge crossing a river. A cherub in the clouds, with a quiver slung over his shoulder, aims his bow and arrow down on the path leading up to the near side of the bridge.

AT: There is only one arrow in the bow and none in the quiver (pictured here).
LCF: There are two arrows, one in the bow and another in the quiver.

Again with the duality: The LCF image reminds the reader that there are two levels of information or two possible outcomes. We see one arrow pointing down to earth and the other, in the quiver, pointing upwards.

The 4th Gate: A jester looking character stands before a maze in a fool’s twin peaked hat. He walks with a stick on his right side — his left leg straight, his right leg crooked. The maze’s entrance is closed. Three gambling dice lay on the path before him: The dice add up to three but the visible sides of each die adds up to six. Three (playing by the rules) vs 666;. Three is god’s perfect number, and 666; is a biblical reference to the devil, a fallen angel. Remember the first gate’s caption regarding playing by the rules?

AT: The maze’s exit archway is bricked up.
LCF: The maze’s exit is open (pictured here).

The engraving’s translated caption is “Fate is not the same for all”. The dice suggest that chance will yield very different outcomes: A dead end for one and an opportunity for another.

The 5th Gate: A old man, seated, counts out gold. They are inside a castle like chamber, foreshadowing the destination. He is being watched over by a cloaked skeleton with an hourglass and a trident. The caption translates to “In vain”.

AT: The hourglass sands are only just starting to flow (sand at the top).
LCF: The sands of time have run out (sand at the bottom, pictured here).

The cloaked figure represents both death and the devil: Death in the skeleton and the devil with a trident. The image suggests that gathering material riches are in vain. Rather than being an achievement to a new beginning — time has been wasted in vain.

The 6th Gate: A man is hanging from the castle walls, upside down, from one leg — captioned “I am enriched by death”. A hand holding a burning sword, like a torch, extends from a castle window. The castle door is shut. The upside down man’s hair and clothing do not hang down and he has a peaceful look on his face, not anguished.

AT: The man is hanging from his right foot (pictured here).
LCF: The man is hanging from his left foot.

We’re at the threshold to the destination. For the material acquisitive right thinking person there are obvious burning sword and hanging references. For the left minded spiritual folk there are promises of torch light to show the way to the other side of the wall — an inverted world into which the spiritual are reborn.

The 7th Gate: A bearded crowned king is playing chess in a castle like room with a young man dressed like a peasant. The door is closed and a crescent moon shines in through an open window. Two dogs, one white and one black, appear to be fighting in the background. The engraving is captioned “The disciple surpasses the master”.

AT: The chess board is black.
LCF: The chess board is white (pictured here).

One chess website suggests the King plays black and the peasant plays white (from the positions of the black and white dogs) and that ultimately the game is equal — a draw. A mere mortal has become the King’s equal. Man is his master’s equal. Man is god.

The 8th Gate: A young man kneeling in prayer. A knight is standing over him with a mace. In the background is a Wheel of Fortune and a castle with a closed door. The caption reads “Virtue lies defeated”.

AT: There is no halo around the head of the knight (pictured here).
LCF: There is a halo around the head of the knight.

I’m not sure I have a good explanation for the symbols here. The wheel, once again, represents chance or fate. The castle is the destination. The haloed knight is probably guarding over the praying man like a guardian angel — much like the girl in the movie appreas to come to Corso’s rescue. The knight without the halo is likely going to bludgeon the kneeling man, as happens to Corso in several different scenes. Perhaps this foreshadows the dual role of the girl in this movie: Apparently a guardian angel but, in the end, a temptress, the fallen angel.

The 9th Gate: Captioned “Now I know that from darkness comes Light” all three of the Ninth Gate engravings are apparently identical. A castle is in the background. In the foreground a naked woman with an open book is seated on a seven headed dragon like creature — which likely represents the whore of Babylon out of Revelations in the bible, associated with the antichrist and downfall. It is the final sexual temptation our pilgrim will encounter. Corso’s guardian angel is apparently a fallen-angel, protecting him on his journey to the Ninth Gate where he succumbs to her temptations.

The engraving in Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s book has the castle burning in the background, not so in the movie’s engraving of the Ninth Gate. The LCF engraving bound in one of the books is a forgery, made to look like the others by the Ceniza twins. The LCF original, later found at the twins’ bookstore, has a starburst of light shining out from behind the castle — the castle is not engulfed in flames but awash with sunlight casting shadows upon the kingdom below.

At the Ninth Gate the misguided would be destroyed in a fire and the spiritual would, after a final temptation, become enlightened. Having succumbed to the final temptation is Corso enlightened or just a bit wiser?

maybe the girl was a satanic version of gabriel sent to show the anti-christ the way back to hell... like jesus was in denial and didnt believe he was truly god until he went to heaven or something. and maybe corso was just the opposite. he didnt know he was really the anti-christ so the greeneyed lady was sent to show him the way. pretty simple.
