Does anyone else have this problem? I think this movie is funny, witty & very creative (though woul love to read the comics for comparison) but everyone I know who has seen it has been well... terribly strident in there dislike
"I believe God created me in one day" Tell him to put you back in cause you aint done yet!
You're not! I saw it for the first time last night at the NFT, and laughed all the way through. I can't believe it didn't even make a ripple on its release in '99. Great actors, production values and OTT special effects - apart from the pimples on the spleen - this rates alongside Galaxy Quest and the Fifth Element for me.
"I agreed, this movie was highly under-rated. I'd like to see a Mystery Men Pt 2 or a Mystery Men comic book."
NO, a comic maybe yes. but NOT a sequel! It's bad that it is an underrated film, because it's really a great film! But in a sense it's good becuase it means they won't make a sequel. That's what i love about it, it works as a stand alone film, as a one off. A sequel is not neccessary at all.

Yeah anyone who doesn't like the movie can go back and watch their National Treasure Blockbusters with formuliac plots, etc. The killer in this movie is the script!!! It is great!!! You have poor penmanship! You dress in the manour of a male prostitute! Just great!
I agree. I bought the dvd recently when it was recommended by a magazine. The first time I watched it I found it stupid and boring. Watched it again today, got the sense of humour they were going for and thoroughly enjoyed it. The line 'dad i'm going to my room with 3 strange men' is worth the price of admission alone.
THis is a great movie for all the reasons you listed. So many people don't remember it, but so chock full of really good early performances. I liked Ben Stiller in his earlier films like "Flirting with Disaster", and "Zero Effect" as much if not more than the big character type roles he's fond of. Eddie Izzard never fails if you ask me! The list goes on and on in this cast.
i never caught it in the theaters, just wound up renting it on a whim sometime in college -- 2001 or 2002, and i LOVED IT.
it's become one of my favorites, a DVD i come back to at least once a year. stellar dialogue, stellar cast, you name it. call me crazy, but i also think it's cinematography needs to be praised. the images themselves look AWESOME, and IMO, stand up with the visuals of any newer superhero flick,
and i love the moment towards the end where tom waits is watching the news report, eating his cereal, and is like "come on ...what's up with that defraculator?"
thanks for making this thread! feels good to know other people love this film as well.
I hated this movie when I first saw it, mainly cos I was expecting something else, ie a serious superhero movie, and I was watching it with people with no sense of humour who kept bagging it.
Then I watched it again a few years later with a friend, and absolutely loved it. The humour is so subtle and unexpectedly intelligent, and Greg Kinnear's facial expressions are pure gold. The scene where he's strapped in the Fraculator, and is trying to get them to press the "toggles" and they can't work it out, just slays me every time.
So, I can see why people don't like it and will refuse to give it a go, but all they're doing is missing out on a comedy classic.
