Biggest let-down sequel ever! Haven't watched since 2002

M.I.B was a big deal when it first came out. I can't remember a movie getting as much promotion and publicity before. It seemed to be a universally loved movie as well. An instant classic. Everyone in school loved it. I re-watched it many times when I was younger and still watch it to this day

What a disappointment M.I.B II was. I saw it in the cinemas in 2002 and up to that point it was easily the worst movie I'd seen in the cinemas. To this day I haven't re-watched it. It got hardly any positive reviews. None of the kids at school liked it. I've never heard/read anything positive about it in the years since. Infact, I've hardly heard/read anything about it, period because it was so utterly forgettable. It left no impression.

I'm amazed it even has a rating over 6 on this site. I was expecting it to be in the 4s. Ridiculous that the original isn't even rated 2 points higher.

Who actually likes this movie?

I just re-watched MIB2 for the first time in many, many years. I didn't find it to be particularly disappointing, but then again I didn't find the original to be particularly great. I thought the original was fun, and I thought the sequel was derivative but also fun. In all these years I had no idea anybody had strong feelings about them one way or the other about light weight easy-breezy comedies. Wish I could give enough of a fuck to validate your feelings, sorry.

I liked it 20 years ago and upon rewatching it I still like it.

It's a short (only 1hr20mins) sci-fi comedy with some sex appeal. It's a good fun time, nothing truly special or groundbreaking but I'm not sure what the issue with it is for some people such as the OP.

They had the bicyclists outfitted with string lights again!

Yeah, I'm of the opinion it wasn't as smart of a sequel, the first movies' success gets to their head. That's putting it mildly probably, dunno, I haven't sat thru the whole second film.

They went a less charming route and more comedic and it didn't pay off, anyway... I expected that awhile ago, skipping it and sticking with the original.

I never cared for it. I wish Linda Fiorentino had been willing to come back in a lead role. I hated having her replaced with Tommy Lee Jones' character K and taking away his happy ending at the end of the first movie.

I know this is a 7+ year old post but after recently watching this for the first time since it came out, I have to largely agree. I loved the first one as a kid, was a big Will Smith fan who was a rapidly rising movie star at the time & was excited for the second film when it came out. With that said, I definitely remember it being perhaps the most underwhelming movie experiences I had involving a film I was initially excited about. Strangely I didn't even feel hugely disappointed or anything, it was just a huge feeling of "Meh!" and never feeling the desire to ever watch it again until recently when it popped up on Amazon Prime I needed to put something on while on the treadmill. From the super generic, lackluster plot, characters & performances, absolutely everything just feels phoned in. Even Will Smith (who carries the film, although that's not saying much) seemed a bit "checked out" & going through the motions from the usual charismatic, high energy he would bring to his roles. Watching it again just reinforced the decades long feeling (on the rare occasion I'd even think about it) of indifference and disinterest I have towards this film.
