First, I never expected a full-out action packed movie like Star Wars or Avengers, or 007, it's not one of these type of movies.
But it has plenty of aliens, mystery, and suspense.
It's also got Mulder and Scully & Skinner relationship so well.
So, really I don't understand the complaints about this movie, it's great as it is.
I think the only people think it's bad, WANT it to be bad in the first place.

That is almost exactly right! There are some genuine fans who were disappointed, and even I don't think it is as good as it could have been, but most of those who are highly critical are as you say people who want to hate it and who want others to hate it as much as they do.
Hmm...I don't know where I stand on this. I'm a genuine fan, watched every single episode and both movies from this series in its original airing, and LOVED it at the time. I'm now rewatching the entire series in preparation for watching the new episodes (with some hesitation...if Frankenhooker taught us anything at all, it's that sometimes it's just not a good idea to bring something back from death no matter how much you loved it in life) and I just got to the first movie. Watched it last night...and was utterly bored. I wouldn't say I HATED it, and I don't mind if everyone else in the world loves it, but it just didn't add anything to the series for me. Yeah, conspiracy. bad guys who smoke cigarettes in a really evil manner. bees and evil GMO corn. viruses and vicious aliens. Kids with terrible "texan" accents. Mulder and Scully almost kissing only to get interrupted by some danger. Sorry, we can get all that from the show.
But then I have to admit, as I rewatch the series now, I'm actually really enjoying the Monster of the Week episodes far more than the conspiracy ones. Maybe I'm just a different person now.
i thought the film was well received for the most part. Also it was filmed while the show was on air so you cant expect too much to be unveiled cause it can screw up their show

I enjoyed this movie a lot. I actually thought it was better than the majority of the mytharc episodes. The larger scale and production values help in that regard. This really felt like a genuine big-screen adventure.
shareyup agreed!! it's a good alien movie period.. nothing beats fire in the sky, but this is up there as one of the best alien movies.. i just wish the new season was more alien inspired.. that's why x files was so big back in the 90's ,, the alien story arcs and episodes were the best of the series.. all the other stuff was cool too but aliens and the cover up conspiracy was there bread and butter..
