Horrible, disgusting ending.

The sleazy, treacherous whore wins and poor Michael Douglas loses. At least Mortensen's slimy playboy gets it, but that's not enough. How I wish for a second alternate ending, with the hooker dead and Michael being victorious, getting away with everything.

I believe, based on the slightly evil histories of Viggo and Gywenth, neither of them would satisfy the audience if they were to 'win' at the end because the audience is looking for a charsmatic main (even 'bad') character to get the two somehow. But as someone posted before: if they had directed the film differently and used the original ending -- where gywenth isn't some meek gullible character but the one who ends up having 'the perfect murder' at the end and gets away with it. the alternate ending would have made her the real bad guy and we can lament on how the man we routed for all along got taken in the very end. then its a thoughtful piece and a darker one. bad guy (blonde chick) wins and shows her true iniquity. Hitchcock would've been happy to see that remake.

I like that ending. Though Steven was an ass, she cheated on him instead of working with her husband or asking for a divorce. All three main characters are not good people (an affair, a controlling husband, and a criminal).

I only wish she did die and he got everything. OR he files for divorce and gets everything since she's the cheating SOB.

You're saying you think murder is appropriate punishment for having an affair? and MD should have gotten away with attempting to have his wife murdered, succeeding in murdering her lover, and living off his dead wife's riches? That's just nutty, or frighteningly misogynistic.

He WILL get away with it. MD faked his own death! Sequel!!!

this is a joke btw

Unfortunately that's not how it works in the US. Because of "no fault" divorce laws the woman gets everything no matter the circumstances.

There was a case where a judge ordered a divorced man to pay his wife $10,000 in alimony per month. He ended up killing her and he tried to kill the judge too but did not succeed. He then fled to Mexico but unfortunately got caught.

Instead of the convoluted plan MD should have just hired a competent hitman for a few grand.

I agree that he would have killed her if she hadn't killed him first, however the entire movie showed how clever and sneaky he was and I can't help but feel the ending was a bit of a cop-out letting her live and him die

Do guys like "the thing"?
They like it better than no thing.

Nobody realize that the perfect murder was Emily's killing her husband and getting free of any charge?

When Steven planned his murder, Emily's plan was already rolling; first sight of it is when she speaks in arabic to Inspector Karaman, gaining automatically his sympathy.

After this everything was following her plan, and Steven did what she expected him to do, until the last attack when she had no other way than defend herself.

The way the Inspector explain it to her at the end of the movie is the last sight; his empathy for her has become admiration and understanding for her action, and he's not going to do anything against her.

Think of it.

that is basically the alternate ending

she confronts Steven in the kitchen, utters the same dialog but flat out shoots him dead, then she stands there looks at her kitchen counter where she violently slams her dead down on it. so she could have a "attack mark" tells the cop "what happened" and gets away with it.

Everyone is saying how the woman got away with everything, but MD did kill that other guy with the knife that had her prints on it, didn't he? I don't remember the conversation with the cops in the end, might have missed something since I didn't really pay attention, but I believe that wasn't mentioned at all. If it was I apologise.

So, as far as we know she could still be charged when the other guy's body is found even though it's not shown in the film. I like to believe so since the ending really is unfortunate and should've been the other way around.

Hollywood is dominated by feminists that believe it's a woman's right to cheat on him (but woe to any man who dares to cheat on a woman!) and get all his money in the case of a divorce.

This was remake from Dial M For Murder that came out in 1954.
