Catherine Keener as Maxine?

I'm sorry, am I the only one who thought Catherine Keener as Maxine was a complete miscast?

I'm not saying Keener isn't a good actress -- she's a wonderful actress. I just thought they could've cast someone more seductive and alluring to fit the character of Maxine. Keener didn't have that sort of appeal in her.

I thought she was fantastic in the part-very attractive, manipulative, self-centered and funny-in short-terrific. I first began to notice her around the time this movie came out-I caught a few of her movies on cable "Walking & Talking" and "Living in Oblivion" and I thought she was a very versatile actress.

For what it's worth, I think all the actors are brilliantly cast.

John Cusack played a dweeb. Cameron Diaz played a frump. Neither Craig nor Lottie were attractive or seductive in this movie. Neither of them would have even been noticed by someone who was "more seductive and alluring." Maxine's confidence and smart-ass one-liners made her appear attractive to both Craig and Lottie. Catherine Keener is perfect in such a role.

The appeal of this movie for both my husband and myself rests with the great dialog which is smart and sassy, especially when spoken by Keener.

I completely disagree with the OP. Keener was perfect for her role in this film.

I would disagree. . . everyone in this was perfectly cast.
