I'm sorry, am I the only one who thought Catherine Keener as Maxine was a complete miscast?
I'm not saying Keener isn't a good actress -- she's a wonderful actress. I just thought they could've cast someone more seductive and alluring to fit the character of Maxine. Keener didn't have that sort of appeal in her.
I think she was perfectly cast. During the scene where she had sex with Malkovich while Craig was in Malkovich's body (the first time, while Maxine thinks it's Lotte), I was all like Craig "Yeah, grab her tits, remove her damn shirt!" :)
I would have cast Gina Gershon as Maxine, but only because I did not know about Miss Keener before.
I can't imagine anyone taking the role who was actually the definition of sexy and seductive. Not that Keener can't be sexy and seductive, but that isn't how she played the role. It would have been out of place in a movie full of misfits and outcasts. I think Keener gives an award worthy performance, one of her bests...
shareI've been a big fan of Catherine Keener since I saw Living in Oblivion in 1995. She was perfect. If you look at some of her characters before Maxine, you can see a pattern in her performances - all roads led to Maxine. The year before Being John Malkovich, she appeared in Your Friends & Neighbors as a very similar sassy, sarcastic and sexy character (she was Ben Stiller's girlfriend). And even her small role in Out of Sight, as George Clooney's ex, was a little Maxine-like ("hey bank robber, next time, leave the engine running").
I will watch Catherine Keener read the phone book. She's great.

I agree with the original poster. Miss Kreener although a good actress was miscast. Her personality do not possess the seductiveness required for that role. I have also heard rumors that she was also reluctant to show her breast during the sex scenes because they are not impressive. Hard to argue that fact.

Just because she's not the Hollywood idea of "attractive" doesn't make her miscast. I thought she was fantastic. It's all in the attitude in that part. She doesn't play a model, she's a femme fatale. And she does the part justice imo.

I think she was cast well. More like the actual work hottie that a husband might have an affair with at work than a movie star. It's unlikely that an Angelina Jolie ends up being the other woman in real life. It's usually someone like Keener who is fairly attractive, confident, and available. She seemed like a very realistic choice and she had a lot of allure.
shareYes Keener is a realistic hottie in this role. Also, were Craig and Lotte supposed to be super attractive or something? How is it not believable that they would fall for her? Craig basically lusted after her immediately and for good reason. She was much more attractive than his wife, and honestly if someone like Cusack's character in this film scored a Maxine in real life, they would not be complaining! Also I felt Lotte had more of a fixation on Maxine because Maxine was the first woman to show her attention in that way. She admitted on the dinner date that she had never had a woman look at her like that before. So I do think she found her alluring, but there were other factors. But again, Keener would be quite a catch for Diaz's character in the movie. The only questionable one would be Malkovich, but interference helped him initially meet Maxine. Plus he isn't a super famous actor or considered a super hot actor so I think Maxine is a believable love interest for him.
