It doesn't seem like she had much of a career since beating out Minnie Driver doing bugger-all in Good Will Hunting, Julianne Moore and her orange bush in Boogie Nights, the old bag on Titanic and Joan Cusack getting her boobs In & Out.
Was Kim startling good in LA Confidential? Who should have been nominated over Minnie?
"Yeh, and she should've won for Batman"
Hahahhahahhahhahah! Thanks I needed a good laugh. Seriously, she did nothing award worthy in Batman! It's hilarious you think she deserved an Oscar for it. And this is coming from someone who likes Tim Burton's Batman movie.
There was probably an "Oscar politics" angle to Basinger's win, to start:
LA Confidential was a critically acclaimed movie that was clearly one of the best studio films of the year(THE best, in my opinion.)
The cast was filled with MALE actors getting to act out extremely complex and well-written characters. You could have practically nominated every male performance in the movie, starting with Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito(converting his lovable shyster personality into sheer evil) -- perhaps all in the "Supporting Actor" category (they all supported each other, the "star part" kept shifting.)
But none of the MEN got nominated at all. Only the female lead: Basinger.
So when Oscar night came and it became apparent that Titanic was to be the big winner(with As Good As It Gets secruting Best Actor and Best Actress)...the vote seemed clear: LA Confidential needed SOME wins...so give one to Basinger.
The only other win for LA Confidential was the most appropriate of all : Best Adapted Screenplay(this is what Best Pictures that don't win Best Picture usually win.)
Then, and only then, could one approach the merits of Basinger's performance and...its a good role, well played by the actress.
Basinger was another hot Hollywood actress who struggled with her roles. She was a Bond girl in Never Say Never Again; she was "the girl" in Batman(the role was beefed up for her, but Nicholson and Keaton ran the show) and...then she just sort of worked for awhile.
Basinger's "career descent" as a star informed her Lynn Bracken...a beautiful woman who THOUGHT she was going to be an actress, but ended up a hooker("We still get to act a little.'") A once-young beauty now starting to show some age. And a nice enough woman to pursue an actual romantic relationship with a tough, damaged cop because she sees HIS inner hurt and integrity.
Plus the "reallpolitik" revelation that Lynn has sex with at least two men a day.
It was a good role played by a Hollywood beauty on the edge of "age" -- and as with pretty women in Hollywood all the time, fighting obsolences.
Finally, Kim Basinger won that Oscar REPRESENTING LA Confidential. An actual acting award(always the "human face" of the Oscars) on top of that deserved screenplay award.
