Why were the muses black?
Is it because of the stereotype that blacks are naturally good at singing? That they are the only ones who can possess "soul"? Because the ancient Grecians were white.

shareThe muses were drawn on the red vases and came to life.
In ancient Greece, this was a VERY popular style of vase making, though I forget the exact name. It was red vases with BLACK figures on it.
When they chose to go for gospel type songs, the best singers they could find to fit the feel were black. And because the voice actresses were black, they made the characters black.
There wasn't really any reason that the characters had to be black, though. In the stage version they used to have on the Disney Cruise Line, some, if not all (I don't particularly remember), of the muses were white, and did well at singing the songs. One of them was also a man (xD), but he was just thrown in there for comedy. (They were having auditions for the fifth muse in the show, and he showed up (in a moose outfit) thinking they were auditioning for the fifth moose.)
Also, who in the heck cares? Hercules's mother was /PINK/.
PIIINK.
Well, she's a goddess
shareWhy not?
shareI'm not sure but they didn't look black to me, they looked Greek.
He failed to bring back the sampo.
If they stuck to every cultural standard of ancient Greece, the movie would be very, very different.
shareDamn, people! Get your head out of your asses and stop playing the race card every time you need to feel important.
I hate the lack of racial diversity in past Disney movies as much as most people.
But think about this:
1. Most of the classic Disney animated films are set in a location that has a general population. But that STILL doesn't excuse the often COMPLETELY "white" cast.
2. Anytime there actually IS a racially different character/cast (I'm talking about those that are not BLATANTLY stereotypical), people bitch and moan, fabricating so called "racist" attributes. Hell, I could do the same for a WHITE character, but no one would give a rats ass. What this actually does is decrease diversity in the media, because the producers know that no matter what they do, there will always SOMETHING "racist".
3. The only exception is when the producers and creators are black or part of the portrayed race. The could go CRAZY with stereotypes, and yet NO ONE would question it because they think a producer would not insult their own race! EVEN THOUGH THEY DO.
The muses are black because THEY WANTED A GOSPEL CHOIR. That style of singing is USUALLY a part of an African-American GOSPEL CHOIR. That is a FACT. Have any of you ever heard a Hispanic or Asian choir with the same spirit and power?
Also, the voice actresses are black! WHY would they participate for the roles if they were racist?! They aren't stupid!
There was NOTHING racist about the Muses' depiction.
Enjoy your hidden racist conspiracy theories.

Me a moron? Tell me, do you TRY to be stupid or is it a natural talent?
And god damn, stop quoting "soulfully". Look above. I never said "soulfully". Ever. Never did.
I asked if you had ever heard Asians or Hispanics sing with THE SAME spirit and power? Please, DO answer the question. That kind of "spirit and power" (by the way, that is how you use quotations) is specific to African-American culture.
I never said that Asians and Hispanics couldn't have "spirit and power" (ooh, look, another proper quotation) in their singing, I just said that their singing would not be THE SAME feeling as that of an African-American style gospel choir.
Now get your *beep* panties untwisted and learn to use actual brain-power rather than pulling the 'racist card'. You could mentally and emotionally destroy someone with your dramatic accusations!
Becuase ancient Greeks had darker skin.
You can be "white" by ethnicity, but have
dark skin. And on some Greek vase paintings, they
are very dark. (Maybe it showed up better, I don't
know) Here's what I mean,

Anyway, I'm kind of glad they made it Gospel-esque. The
songs were more catchy!
What's wrong with the muses being black? The movie isn't even historically accurate themselves...
