How can people like this movie

Seriously what is soo special about this film. It's a watered down version of star wars..

But seriously nominated for an oscar??? Why wasn't battleearth nominated for one?
It was soo much better?

Please tell me what makes this film great? I thought Dogma was better .

I wanted to like this movie. Big budget, Bruce Willis, Milla Jojovich, etc. This could have been an epic movie, but I was disappointed they a slapstick route. Milla's character slapping those big aliens like a cartoon, and Chris Tucker's yap yap yapping were things that took the air out of this film for me.

Maybe I should watch it again, I might feel different. I saw it in the theaters when it came out. I just remember leaving disappointed. Big budget Bruce Willis scifi vehicle could have been great but fell short.

Compared to the crap that is churned out today, you might feel differently about the film now. Yeah, some of it suffers from a little bit of cheesiness and a few cliches, but the costume and set design, the sound and the score, the basic concept, and characters like Leeloo and Ruby Rhod are just so great. This movie is certainly unique and has much to be appreciated.

This is definitely not a watered down version of Srar Wars.

I like it because it doesn't take itself seriously, it's just good old "blow up all the stuff!!" action with humour. :D The music is awesome, i love the sets and costumes and generally how stuff is designed.

Star Wars is more of a space fairy tale, this is a sci-fi rollercoaster.

Three words, seven syllables: Milla Jovovich's fine ass.

"If you are what you eat... I could be you by morning."

1,2,3...4

That would be four words.....

....and eight syllables.

But still one ultra-fine ass...

Seriously though, even just taking Milla's contribution into account: phenomenal and convincing action sequences (so much so that she had bruised herself up pretty badly), maintaining relevance and meaning while speaking an alien language (that she helped to refine and had to memorize), and evidencing an incredible emotional range and acting abilities.

Being one of the most beautiful women in film, even with burned out orange hair, is just icing on the cake.

For me, the entire movie is just a great compilation of elements... including the basic story itself, the scriptwriting, the actors involved, from Bruce Willis to Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, Brion James, Tiny Lister, Sir Ian Holm, and even Chris Tucker, some of the most fantastic visualization and world design ever seen in a movie, some wonderfully creative cinematography and editing (such as the combined scenes of Leeloo describing the current location of the stones while Zorg is meeting with the Mangalores, and Ruby Rhod's sexual escapades combined with the launch sequence of the ship), and last but not least, Eric Serra's amazing soundtrack, which is worthy all by itself in isolation.

LISTEN! ... Do you smell something?

Thumbs up.

Only good thing about this half-witted piece of crap.

It's not like Star Wars at all...it is just fun and nice to look at full of awesome sets and pretty girls. What's not to like? Stoner movies are so much better made by a fat slob...well, to each their own.

I hated The Fifth Element when I first saw it, because I wanted a 'hard' sci-fi movie. But when I adjusted my expectations and accepted the comic book style I grew to enjoy it immensely.

Wow a watered down star wars, personally I thought that movie was boring compared to Fifth Element not to say Star War was a bad film. I just feel F/E had more pizzazz and was way more entertaining. Everyone has a right to their opinion so maybe you saw something i didn't.

God bless.
If you love Jesus Christ and 100% proud of it copy this and make it your signature!

I thought I was the only one. :P
Star wars did felt boring compared to fifth element. Didn't liked it that much.
Maybe because it was so old movie, must be an effect of generation gap. :P

George Lucas would admit that Star Wars is a watered down version of a Akira Kurosawa film :)

As for Star Wars inspirations I see it only as much as you could say Star Trek had an influence in the film as well in that they all take place in a future technology setting with space travel and aliens. I don't know what other relevant details could be shared between the two films. this movie doesn't have wookies, light sabers, magical warriors, or individualistic autonomous robot characters.

In fact the planet destroying moon in 5th has more in common with the Star Trek The Original Series episode "The Doomsday Machine" with the planet killer than it does the death star. And none of these concepts are new in sci-fi, planetary destruction is often a good plot device in many sci-fi.

If I might make a presumption, the fact that you suggest it is similar to Star Wars with such vague cross reference makes me think that you were already hoping for a Star Wars like movie in Fifth Element, however when it fell short of expectations you failed to judge the movie on it's own original merit.
