There are other great gems, but they're not springing to my sleep deprived mind at the moment.

Have you seen The City of the Lost Children? The plot is not similar, but there's some stylistic similarities, I think...

Brazil (1985) is similar

While there are similar movies (like the ones already mentioned by some) Dark City is really the best and one of a kind. Particularly the director's cut is unmatched in my humble opinion.

Nonetheless here are some that are kinda similar in style and that have not been mentioned yet:

1. Angels Egg (the visual are very similar and it's also quite dark and it's visuals where also inspired by Metropolis so it has a very similar look and feel.) And it's also a movie that one has to think about and it has a lot of symbolism. But this movie isn't for everyone. One has to use ones mind A LOT in order to make any sense out of it. It's a completely unrelated movie with a completely unrelated story and it's an anime. But out of all the movies on ANY list this is probably the one that will appeal the most to Dark City fans.

2. Spellbound also has a similar feel and the plot too is somewhat similar - at least in parts. But while it has A LOT of symbolism, it doesn't have philosophical aspects like Dark City and Angels Egg do.

3.Inland Empire. This movie is just one gigantic Mind Fu*k.

4. The Fountain (Also a Mind Fu*k but also a very philosophical movie).

5. Perfect Blue. It's similar in style as it is also a Neo-Noir Film with a dark plot and twist ending.

6. Book of Dreams. A previous movie by Alex Proyas. I am surprised nobody has mentioned it yet, as it of course has VERY similar visual and it's even referenced IN Dark City (it's the movie that's playing in the Theater IN Dark City).

7. Oh and of course Knowing is also by Alex Proyas and is also somewhat similar.

Try Avalon. Japanese movie made in Poland. Very similar in style and story.
