Dark City of NO dark people

I enjoyed the movie. What was distracting was that all the aliens were pasty, which can be if that's what is in there home. But to kidnap an entire city of people with no "memories" of people of color? Alien to whatever time or place represented. Yeah, I remember the hotel guy.

The guys in the subway. When Murdoch asks which train to Shell Beach, the (black) guy says: "You want the express"
Then Murdoch asks why didn't the train stop, another guy says: "that was the express"
I think you got the wrong idea from the title being "Dark City"... It's not about Detroit!! LOL

Liked this film too---it would have been a little more interesting set in a Detroit of the 1940s, though---ha ha ha! It didn't really get any promotion at the time it came out, which is why I never caught it (same with THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR,which came out after this did, with another storyline about alternate realities.) Also check out the 1973 German sci-fi flick WORLD ON A WIRE,which also has a similar alternative reality them (and was based on the same story that THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR was base3d on----a nice, weird eerie flick in its own right, and the only one I've seen end with an early obscure but beautiful Fleetwood Mac blues instrumental, lol.

Yeah, I guess that's maybe a problem with Hollywood. OTOH, cultural; demographics, ya know. Who knows, really? Ask Hollywood for all I know for an answer to that one, man.

No dark people?

The Jazz Band (3 members)
The Subway traveller Murdoch asks for directions
The platform attendant at the station
The second Hotel clerk
Various background sleepers

While not implicitely stated, it is abundantly clear that the abductees have been taken from America, specifically individuals with strong memories of 1940's through to 1960's America. Minorities were less prevalent then, & Asian minorities especially so (likely why we see no Asian citizens).

If you saw no dark people, I can only assume you were very, very severely distracted while watching the movie.

Maybe looking at Jennifer Connolly?

i usually don't notice, but for some reason i noticed a black guy holding a shoulder bag on the train, i think rufus asked him about schell beach, and he told him to take the express train. yes he spoke, and that's it

reply

I always thought that guy was notable, because he was wearing a hoodie, which kinda placed him chronologically outside of the 30s-50s aesthetic that most of the rest of the city had.

This movie is called Dark City not because of race, but because the city is perpetually in night time and is hence constantly surrounded by darkness thus the name.

I wonder if I was racist if I wouldn't have noticed all the diverse characters either.

I just had to say this thread title cracked me up. Props. But yeah, as others have mentioned, there are a few non-white people in bit parts (jazz musicians, 2nd hotel clerk, subway guy who tells him to take the Express, other background characters). In your defense though, I will say that the Dark City was definitely east coast (looking at the map of Shell Beach on the east) and the accents and attitudes would imply America (lot of Brooklyn accents), and the coats would imply mid-northern climate such as New York, Philly, or Jersey, all places which have a significant non-white population perhaps not fairly represented in the cast. Whatever, though. Good movie and funny thread title.

Well, it was a "city". There are many cities here in California where you'd be hard-pressed to find one person of color.
