I enjoyed the movie. What was distracting was that all the aliens were pasty, which can be if that's what is in there home. But to kidnap an entire city of people with no "memories" of people of color? Alien to whatever time or place represented. Yeah, I remember the hotel guy.

There were a number of colonies from different European countries in different areas. One of those was a penal colony from England which were criminals plus the families of those that made up the accompanying infrastructure.
The problem with black people if you want to call it that, is that Aborigines don't live like Europeans. My Dad was involved in setting up some Aboriginal communities in the 1960s. They built a number of houses, about 20 or so for the families to live in. What they did was end up living all together in one house. Many groups of Aboriginals live in that way today, mostly in the rural parts of the country, although they get financial aid from the Government.
In Australia there was never a genocide, like with the American Indians, and there was never slavery to bring in black people from Africa. The Aboriginals are more like the American Indians than the African slaves. They like to live a certain way, and they do so much like America has Indian reservations.

Up until about 10 years ago, you'd be hard pressed to see a black (African) in the major cities or even Aborigines for that matter - except for small pockets.

For all we know, they all could be Poles or Germans or Bulgarians or whatever--the film is deliberately vague about it.

Even so, they had to grab the people from somewhere on Earth, and there are many places on Earth that do not have a racial variety.
It is also conceivable that for the sake of their experiment, the aliens wanted little variety, so there would be fewer variables to account for. Perhaps they even had another dark city somewhere else where they were studying people of a different racial makeup and then compared the results (or would have compared them if they weren’t defeated).

shareYou're wrong. There are black people in the background of the city. The most obvious example is the black man sitting on the bus when 'Anna" takes the final bus to Shell Beach. You're mistaken. Also if this city is based on an American Metropolis of the 1920s-1940s (which stylistically it was) then the minority population was not as high as it is now. It would be nearly 90% white (except for some ethnic neighborhoods, which we never saw).
(as for the strangers, they were ALL reanimated dead people so they were all devoid of coloration.)
