Jonas Quinn: what say you?
Interesting new member of SG-1 or annoying placeholder for Daniel Jackson?

Boring placeholder. If he had replaced Tealc or Sam, it might not have been so bad, but to replace a dynamic, interesting character like Daniel with a personality zero like Jonas was more than I could tolerate. I felt the same way when Sam replaced Vala in Season 9.
"You two ought to be ashamed of yourselves . . . two grown men acting like . . . grown men!!!"
I quite like him, but the writers never gave the actor much to work with, for instance the episode at the alpha site with the invisible assassin, Jonas wasn't there. Nemic did a fine job with what he was given.
shareI agree. Daniel is my favorite character, but I like Jonas as well.
It would have been interesting to see them interact more after Daniel's return. Jonas could have stayed as a member of another team, help at the base and join SG-1 occasionally in some missions.
"You're not thinking 4th dimensionally!"
I like Jonas, but they could've given him more to do.
If it's all the same to you, I'll have that drink now.-Loki (Marvel's Avengers)
Nothing to hate, but nothing to like either. He would have been a poor-man's replacement for anyone. Teal'c was a better alien fish-out-of-water, and was a better expert in Goa'uld. Sam was better at all science. Daniel was better at languages and cultures. Then they tacked on Jonas' magical knowledge sponge of a brain that just seemed like a cheap plot device. He never really developed much of a personality, beyond that he was a genuinely good guy.
I think I would have preferred a character like McKay be part of SG-1.
Slight spoilers for a 15 year old period of SG1.
Jonas was a great character, but he was not used correctly. Despite being up there with the smartest people (well, humans) in the SG universe (such as Sam, McKay and Eli) he was often regulated to a neutered version of Daniel's job, was missing for entire episodes and a lot of the time when he was present was basically a glorified extra, which was unfortunate because when he was an integral part of episodes he really shined. The worst thing about the whole Jonas thing was that he was almost instantly written out as soon as Daniel came back, would have been cool to keep Quinn on for the rest of the season as a regular character, and then maybe pop up throughout the rest of the run of the series. Especially after Cam and Vala joined SG1, would have been cool to have someone with a "been there, done that" attitude to interact with.
The rumor on the street is that RDA couldn't stand to act with Corin Nemec. Supposedly Nemec was a "perfectionist" who wanted to do take after take after take of a scene because he was never personally satisfied with his own performance. From what I've read the situation finally reached a point where RDA refused to do scenes with him. RDA's part would be filmed and Nemec's would be filmed separately if possible.
That doesn't mean RDA didn't like Nemec personally. It is, of course, possible to like someone personally but not want to work with them. I'm in that situation now with someone I work with - nice guy but the laziest person I've ever worked with in my life, which only makes me and everyone else have to work harder to make up for his laziness.
Anyway, that's the rumor I've heard. True? Don't know.
I'll believe that. You could see the hatewaves in the air whenever RDA looked at Nemec.
shareInteresting. I've never heard that rumor. Daniel is my favorite character in all of the Sg verse, but I really liked Jonas as well. I wish he has reapperaed in a guest capacity after Daniel returned.
shareIt certainly makes sense, if you think about it.
Though I've also always wondered if they couldn't afford him after contract restructures, I know Shanks and Judge had already had major contract negotiations, I would imagine RDH wasn't cheap to begin with and I'm sure being 7 seasons in every major cast member was being paid very well. Between that and the increase in effects-heavy episodes I'm wondering if they just couldn't fit him in anywhere soon and he just faded out. Kinda like Ford did in SGA actually (who was also one of my favorite characters coincidentally).
Meant RDA in my post above, just noticed I made that typo in it.
shareOff topic, but Ford was one of my favorite characters in SGA and I hated how he became a baddie that they ultimately killed.
shareDoesn't make sense. Getting the actors to do another take is the responsibility of the director. They'd give someone like RDA some clout if he wasn't happy and wanted to do another take, but the new kid on the block is NOT going to have the power to demand take after take after take for no good reason. If they did a take and Nemec wasn't happy but the director was, then that's too bad for Nemec. They would NOT have done more passes at the scene. That's not how the business of television works.
shareI so enjoyed Jonas. Given more time... I think he would of gotten better with his character. If I could choose between him and Jackson, I would choose Jonas hands down. I find Jackson annoying, arrogant and full of himself. His character is self righteous. His way... always the best. He seemed to buck orders and yet did not receive any form of being called to task on it. If he were military and did that he'd be in the brig for his actions. So, well really in fact, I just do not like Michael Shanks. I have seen him in other shows and movies and find he still annoys me to this day. As a romantic lead he stinks. I wish Jonas stayed and Jackson stayed... GONE!
shareI'll go with 'Interesting Placeholder'. It took a little while to get over thinking of 'Parker Lewis Can't Lose' every time he was on screen. His worst episode was when he came back the last time for the drilling episode.
shareGave the show a shot in the arm, it was good.
shareI'm indifferent about him. He's a good enough replacement.
