This movie is way too over rated

This movie was extremely boring, and I wanted to kill Jon Favreau character. I hate how he just whine and bitch in the whole movie. Jon Favreau simply can't act, he only has one facial expression (looking sad, as if somthing is stuck up his a$$).

Since the movie main focus was that one lame character, everything else didn't really seem to matter. The co-stars wasn't anything great, and nothing seems to stand out besides the constant whinning of that one character. Vince Vaugn in the other hand was alright, but he was not on screen long enough to save this mountain high pile of sh!t that goes by the name "Swingers".

All of this time...and nobody's asked you what your favorite comedies in this vein are. I'm curious to see. I'm a Swingers supporter...one of the top quotable movies of the 90's, in my opinion. But I can understand why someone might not like it.

I gave this movie a 6

reply

Wow. A six is generally what I give a mediocre movie, or one that I thought was good but maybe went on too long or was repetitive, etc, etc. When I truly find a movie unwatchable I give it a one or no stars at all, such as the remake of "The Fog". Personally I think Favreau can act as well as write, but if I detested him and his movie as much as it sounds like you do, I would certainly give "Swingers" a much lower rating.

allenchampagne, from your pv every single movie out here can be dumbed down to a two words statement
Swingers' strenght is in its screenplay

reply

i love how everyone disagrees with the original post. favreau is a whiny bitch most of the movie, thats the point, then at the end he totally kicks ass, totally macks it to heather graham and hangs up on his ex-girlfriend...its one of the million amazing parts of this movie. it is a proven fact that swingers is the best movie ever.

reply

this film is so god damn money...but you just don't know it.

I also gave this a 6 out of 10, which i consider to be a fairly good rating. People just have different opinions of what a 6 (or any other rating) stands for. For me: 1-3 is BAD (to the point that i feel sorry for having wasted time and money on watching the film), 4-6 is GOOD, 7&8 is GREAT and 9&10 is AMAZING and/or HIGHLY ORIGINAL.

out of all the things i've lost i miss my mind the least

MACKEN chill the *beep* out. this movie is classic which is saying something by today's standards. this is an original film that is hilarious and deep at times. the movie was not boring and if anything its underrated because I don't hear enough people talking about how great it is(which it is). and I am really pissed off to read something by a person like you who clearly doesn't get truly great pieces of work. just give it another shot because it sounds like to me that you're the one with something stuck up their a$$.

reply

What? There can't be any dissenting opinions about this movie? Everyone has to think this movie is one of the greatest movies ever? I don't think so.

reply

If anything this movie is under rated and under appreciated. This was a great movie, obviously not everyone will like this movie, you have to be atleast some what intelligent and have a moderately large attention span to really enjoy this film and get the full effect. In the end it really boils down to personal preference, and whether or not you like this type of comedy.

ok i know that everyone has different opinions but i think this movie is great because of how realistic it is. especially when someone is breaking up...that is ALL they want to talk about and it can get annoying. that is why this movie is great because it portrays that in such a realistic way. and right when things start going your way...that is when your ex calls you up. i say just enjoy that movie for it's realistic nature and do not judge people who go through break ups...because it sucks!!

reply

1) the movie isn't even rated that highly.
2) if you were bored, that only means that you didn't appreciate, or didn't notice, the dialogue and situational comedy which made up the movie.
3) maybe you're better off with action films.

I love the fact that some people on here complain that the fans of this film claim that it's brilliant without giving good reasons, then they go ahead and criticise the film and their only reasons are 'bad acting' and 'annoying whiney lead character'. The sheer fact that you are complaining about a trait such as 'whiney lead actor', which is a DELIBERATELY INTENDED trait, renders your arguements futile and pointless.

That's just to start.

Now, combine that with the fact that fans of this film have come on here and given a plethora of reasons WHY they love it, explaining themselves and the film, and it leaves critics with no ground to stand on.

If you don't like this film your only reason can be that you don't 'get it', but people rarely like to admit that because is usually indicates that the problem is at their end...

Also, watch Very Bad Things and tell us if you still think Jon is a bad actor. That is a great flick as well. VERY unpredictable.

reply

i have to agree it is way over rated. don't get me wrong there are some good parts int eh movie but i did not enjoy it all that much. but the music was good.

reply

I agree, the music was good.

how old are you? you either get it, or you don't, it is an icon of american culture... one of the best movies ever... I was the same age as those guys when the movie came out but my parents laughed their asses off when they saw it also...

reply

ahhhh the resort to the age insult. clever. i am 44. opinions are like a$$holes and mine is it is over rated. and mine stinks just like yours. i did not identify with the characters. so with that said good night

I really thought the movie was brilliant, the dialouge was awesome. But if you were never into the club/dating/hooking up thing as a young adult I guess you might not appreciate the movie as much. I love the part where each guy gets in his car to go to the party, cause I knew guys who always took their car in case they hooked up. And the answering machine scene was very good too, I have had guys call me the same night they got my number and it really is a turn-off. I give this movie a 10 not much I dont like about it

Yeah, opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one!

But there is one difference- opinions don't have a$$holes, but there are plenty of a$$holes (like aerimus13) who have opinions.

I completely disagree. This is one of the best comedies I have ever seen, and I'm picky when it comes to movies.
John Favreau is not the focus of the movie, by the way. He may be the lead actor, but he's not the focus of the film. He is merely the catalyst that sets certain events and situations in motion; situations that often end up being funny, touching or indeed hilarious.
John Favreau may be annoying and dorky, and you may feel like screaming at him at times (such as in the trailer, at his apartment calling Nicky repeatedly, or in the casino), but that's the whole point! Favreau is supposed to be pathetic! Vince Vaughn may be a definite scene-stealer, but without Favreau, the movie doesn't work. JF is the glue that holds the comedy together, if you will, and his evolution from pathetic dork into slightly-less-pathetic-dork serves as the backdrop to tie the film's chronology into a coherent whole.
