And the oscar goes to....

Is there anyone else on this board who think that Edward was totally screwed at the oscars for this movie. Cuba Gooding Jr. for Jerry Maguire won. I. Don't. Get. It. Edward's acting in this movie was top notch. Professional. Almost Perfect. Who votes on this anyway? I know this was a while ago but it still irks me hardcore. Anyone else agree?

I just saw the end of Primal Fear again, hard to believe it's his first movie. I was looking up who he lost to, Jerry Maguire was more popular at the movies but still a surprise. I recently watched another movie with a great (quieter) Edward Norton role, The Painted Veil. I've seen most of David Fincher's movies except Fight Club with Norton/Pitt

I've been asking that question since 1996 when I saw this film. I still watch it just for his awesome performance. So many times Hollywood misses the mark on Oscar. I think they made the same mistake on newbie's Kate Winslett and others in Titanic. SO many of those roles were Oscar worthy. Proof it's all a game of who can pay who to do what…I seriously think it's about pay offs and bribes.

I've always thought if you want to win an Oscar, by all means use an accent or portray a disability. I thought Norton was just being a stereotypical country bumpkin - nothing more.

William H. Macy should have won.

As a Black female, I can say that they gave it to Cuba Gooding, Jr. because of the racial aspect looming at the time. IMO, at least he was nominated. The Oscar is supposed to be given to the best performanc by an actor. Maybe its a good thing that Ed Norton and others did not win Oscars because they still have careers. If you look at the Oscar winners in the last 25 years, with a few exceptions (Meryl Streep, Daniel Day Lewis, Denzel Washington, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freenman, among a few) - the winners never make a good movie since their Oscar win. I totally believe in THE OSCAR CURSE. What happened to Cuba Gooding Jr, Kim Bassinger, Monique, Gwynth Paltrow (who won against Cate Blanchette playing ELIZABETH!), Halle Berry, Whoopi Goldberg (who deserved it for The Color Purple), Joe Pesci, Adran Brody and a host of other winners. Where are they now in the film business?

Actually, the Oscar should be given to the best or most memorable performance by an actor. Look at 1992- where Gene Hackman, Unforgiven won over Jaye Davidson in The Crying Game. Davidson's performance was more memorable than Hackman's and I don't remember Hackman's performance.

... and don't get me started on the "In Memoriam" part of the show. Show everyone in the film industry who passed away the previous year or don't show it at all.

What about Pacino in TGF? He didn't win any wards either or Lemmon in Glengarry Glen Ross.
