I don't trust anyone who doesn't like this movie.

This is a top tier disaster flick that provides the cheesiness, the effects, the explosions and everything else you want in a blockbuster.

They don't do movies like these anymore.
Any director who wants to produce an action and science fiction film must study this film from the bottom up.

I can't think of the last disaster movie I liked. This film checks everything off the list that makes movies like this enjoyable.

Not everyone would classify Independence Day as a disaster movie, but it definitely belongs to that genre. Entire cities in the USA and around the world are demolished by evil aliens. I liked Armageddon, The Day After Tomorrow, and Twister. Unfortunately, it's a dying genre.
However, if you ask me, movies like The Mummy (1999) that combine action, humor, and fantasy/science fiction are the closest in spirit to Independence Day.

Some people think Titanic and Speed 2 are disaster movies, but I think those belong in a different category.

Interesting discussion.

If Titanic isn't a disaster movie, then the same could be said about The Towering Inferno. Both take place in a specific location rather than worldwide or across a country, and they don’t disrupt the daily lives of people who aren’t directly involved. Another reason that might support your argument, Titanic doesn't follow the typical disaster movie formula—the good guys don’t win in the end, and there isn’t a group effort to overcome the catastrophe, as seen in many disaster films like the underrated movie Daylight.

On the other hand, I think everything is a matter of classification and definition. Titanic can be classified as a disaster movie because (1) the real event was perceived as such in real-time, (2) half of the passengers were killed, and (3) a large part of the scenes in the film focus on the tragic event itself.

I tend to classify Titanic as a disaster movie.

Speed 2, alternatively, is not close to a disaster movie as I understand it.

reply

I don't really consider Speed 2 disaster because the disaster was a villain creating the disaster. It's more of a destruction movie. Titanic is also a love story which is why I never truly considered it an all-out disaster movie.

reply

Good point. Titanic is first of all a romantic movie.

reply

Agreed.
I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like Tremors.
