This film is an insult to the original

Escape From New York, despite its sci-fi roots, was a film with a very serious and creepy tone. The atmosphere of the first film was one of constant tension and dread. New York is a place that you fear - a place you would never want to visit. EFLA takes all that tone and completely throws it in the trash can. The plot is basically a scene-by-scene rehash of the first film, but with zero atmosphere, and almost cheesy, unintentional slap-stick comedy. The horrible special effects just hammer home that John Carpenter wasn't interested in creating a true sequel, but just cashing in on the legacy of one of his top-three masterpieces of his early work.

Other than Russell, who is the only watchable element of this film, there is not one other interesting character or half-decently acted role in this turd of a movie, although I may give a pass to Peter Fonda.

A J Langer in the short-shorts was also watchable.

Seriously, I like this move as much as you do, but you gave a new perspective on it. You are 100% on target about "constant tension and dread. New York is a place that you fear - a place you would never want to visit".

Maybe Carpenter tried to capture the superficial nature of LA. If so, it didn't really work.

This is Carpenter's Godfather III.

Lots of good points. I just watched both movies back to back and my main complaint was the similarity to the first one. At first I thought it was trying to be funny but as it went on it seemed lazy. Only difference is they jazzed it up and blew some stuff up. This one has a couple moments but the subtlety and grittiness of the first one make it way better.

Yeah, this one was nothing more than a parody of the first. Scene-by-scene rehash, but everything so much lamer.

EFLA is simply a replay of the original. But, it relies too much on early-generation visual effects, which doesn't help. The production designers and art directors do everything they can, but it really doesn't matter. We have the original and can just ignore the sequel.
