The EMP would have killed the hummer too.

Since the EMP killed all the electronics in the helicopter and it crashed, wouldnt the EMP have killed the hummer as well? Think about it, even though the car was off, the battery was still connected which means the ECU still had power, the car wouldnt have been able to start, unless all hummers have carburetors, but I doubt that

Maybe Im just too technical

Is nobody bothered that an EMP would be like sticking your head in a microwave?

I had a roomate that tried to stick his head in the microwave. He couldn't quite figure out how to get the door close. Perhaps he wasn't doing it right. :-P

There would've been no EMP from the nuke. An underground detonation cannot charge particles in the air to affect electronic equipment.... the helicopter would've functioned as normal in real life.

The Rule Of Hollywood Science: if a character explains something, that is the way physics work in the universe of that film.

Travolta's over-the-top villain said something like "turn off anything electronic, boys" and I guess that's enough to stop circuitry from being fried -- as long as it is turned "off". #lol

So EMP is incorrectly represented in movies/TV all the time. Being turned off DOES NOT protect electronics. The only thing that protects sensitive electronics from the magnetic pulse is conductive shielding physically between the EMP source and the electronics (called a Faraday cage). A magnetic wave (comes along with the light) expands out the same as light from the blast and as that wave washes over conductive things it induces electricity. It induces a LOT of electricity (up to thousands of amperes depending on size of explosion and distance) which small/delicate wires can't handle and melt. That is where the damage comes from.

Now to specifically address the hummer, it depends on many things, but most likely yes. Much older cars without fuel injection and especially diesels are your best bet to function after an EMP event.
