Munich is the best.

The Killer Elite with James Caan and Robert Duvall is pretty good.

Leon/The professional is one one of the best.

The Mechanic with Charles Bronson.I cannot believe no has mentioned that one.

Collateral was damm good.

Silent Trigger is quite underatted.

Assassins is a fun movie but they should have went for the jugluar.

Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead

I cant believe noone has mentioned Fulltime Killer, the Japanese version of Assassins, they make references to several other assassin movies including Leon. If you like assassins definitely watch Fulltime Killer

Collateral could have been a great movie, except it for the big Audioslave plug in the middle of the movie. It could have been directed better.

For me, in order by top 10:

1. The Killer (The most ass-kicking action movie I've ever seen).
2. Unforgiven (Great Clint Eastwood Western that deals with killers)
3. The Professional (Jean Reno vs Gary Oldman, what more can I say?)
4. La Femme Nikita (the original version, not the Peta Wilson nor the Bridget Fonda versions)
5. Le Samourai (an old French movie, which was the inspiration for The Killer)
6. The Mechanic (Excellent Charles Bronson film)
7. Munich (Based on Real-life events)
8. Road To Perdition (For a movie based on the Graphic Novel, it is very heartfelt).
9. Day Of The Jackal (the original Edward Fox version)
10. Collateral

It just occurred to me that this movie is an assassin movie and its a great one, Boondock Saints

Sorry for being a little late to this party. Complicated business.

Anyway, I'd have to say this list most closely represents my taste, except I'd always put Day of the Jackal at the top of any assassin movie list, and I'm not the biggest John Woo fan, but I look forward to checking out The Killer, based on the rest of the list, and I'll just add a couple:

The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
Coldblooded (1995) - this one was never released on DVD IIRC. Jason Priestly from the original 90210 is kind of an Asperger's-type who discovers he's really good at killing people. Awesome black comedy with a funny cameo from Michael J. Fox.

and while they're not assassin movies, I'd guess that fans of The Mechanic would like:

Tony Rome (1967)
Point Blank (1967)

Léon The Professional, Hands down.

-1.The Professional (1994) (is BY FAR the best assassin movie PERIOD. and one of my favorite movies in general. an easy 10/10 and i rarely give out 10's)
-2.Collateral (2004) (this is also great, 9/10)
-3.Assassins (1995) (i got this in #3 as it's a far underrated movie. i give it a 8/10)
-4.Ghost Dog (1999) (another solid assassin film, 8/10)

and hopefully Hitman (2007) joins this elite group, as i got high hopes for it ;)

theres more assassin films i like but to me these are the most stand out ones of the "Assassin" genre ;)

p.s. i aint seen some films that are considered great like "The Killer" "Le Femme Nikita" etc etc but i just HATE watching films with subtitles :( ... so stuff like these even though could be great i think will ultimately be dulled down by the lack of speaking english.

EDIT: (June 9th 2008) i forgot to update this but i seen Nikita (1990) (8/10) a while ago and it's a pretty solid hitman themed movie and for a female hitman themed movie this is probably the best one out there (and no i dont consider Kill Bill hitman/assassin type movies, at least not in the same sense as Leon/Collateral are... but kill bill vol1+2 are great movies though).... plus back on topic, Leon (Victor) is basically in this movie near the end to and it feels exactly like the Leon character in the 1994 film)

-------------

p.s. some of the movies other people listed as "assassin" movies i dont even consider that type of movie... like Munich/Ronin/Road To Perdition/Unforgiven/Boondock saints.

-munich (8/10) to me dont really feel like a "assassin" type movie.
-Ronin (8/10) also dont feel like a "assassin" type movie.
-Road To Perdition (10/10) is not a assassin movie, it's basically a gangster movie and a great one i might add! ;)
-Unforgiven (9/10) to me is a "Western" not a assassin movie.
-boondock saints (10/10) is another great movie but does not feel like a assassin movie to me

a reply to my post above from about 8-9 years ago now which at that time i was 28 years old (going on 29 later the year i lasted edited the post)...

it's kinda funny reading some of my stuff now as my opinion has changed quite a bit on some of what i said as the vast majority of the movies i listed in that post are nothing special for me anymore even though some still hold strong on more recent re-watches. but since then my rating system etc has been much more refined etc. but most importantly i rate movies based on how enjoyable they are to watch and the further they get away from that the lower the rating.

but just to comment on all of the movies i mentioned in my previous post above (from about 8-9 years ago now) for my current opinion of them (IN NO ORDER)...

-Leon (1994) - 5/10 (while this dropped off a lot. my comment about rarely handing out 10's still remains accurate as currently there is only eleven movies that managed to get a 10 from me)
-Nikita (1990) - 5/10 (also, my comment in my post from 8-9 years ago above i said that Victor character (in the Nikita movie) feels exactly like the Leon character but i would not say that's entirely accurate as Victor is more serious/cold as ice where as Leon is not entirely like that)
-Munich (2005) - 8-8.5/10 (not much outside of my Top 31 movies)
-Ronin (1998) - 6/10
-Unforgiven (1992) - 6/10
-The Boondock Saints (1999) - 5/10
-Hitman (2007) - 6/10
-Collateral (2004) - 5/10
-Ghost Dog (1999) - 6/10
-Road to Perdition (2002) - 10/10 (still remains top spec for me. within my Top 11 movies in general)
-The Killer (1989) - 6/10
-Kill Bill Vol 1 (2003) - 5/10
-Kill Bill Vol 2 (2004) - 6.5-7/10 (while this has dropped off a fair amount since that post it still remains within my Top 204 movies)

in a very basic sense for me... 5/10 or less = Thumbs Down. 6/10 or higher = Thumbs Up. for measure... only 204 movies out of the 2,000+ total movies i have seen managed to get a 7 or higher score from me.

so with that said... as you can see, while i still like a portion of those movies there is really only three of them that still 'stand out' for me (along with Assassins (1995) which i comment on a bit below).

even my comment above about 'hating subtitles'... i have not thought that way for a long time now. movies can still be top notch with subtitles even though i will say once in a while if you need to be paying attention to facial expressions etc a bit more while quite a bit of dialog is happening that can take you out of the movie a bit. but overall this is largely not a issue.

also, my favorite hitman/assassin themed movie is currently... The American (2010) which is within my Top 31 movies in general. i would say for legit hitman/assassin movies i would likely place Assassins (1995) behind that movie. but i will say those two are different from each other in that The American is largely carried by the atmosphere/mood of the movie along with Clooney's more paranoid character where as with Assassins it's largely carried by the Stallone and Banderas drama as they work well on screen together etc.

NOTE: i don't count other movies i rank higher than The American (2010) like No Country for Old Men (2007)/Road to Perdition (2002) as part of the hitman/assassin genre even though Jude Law's character could probably be considered legitimately inline with my general hitman/assassin type of character. but Bardem's character in No Country i kinda see more of a low key/controlled psychopath more than a hitman/assassin even though i guess someone could possibly claim he counts.

but anyways... i just finished re-watching Assassins (1995) (my previous viewing of it was May 27th 2014) just now on Nov 29th 2016 and it remains steady. i give it a 7.5-8/10 which makes it within my Top 115 movies. basically... Stallone and Banderas really elevate the movie as i would say Assassins is Stallone and Julianne Moore's best movie and would be my 2nd or 3rd favorite Banderas movie (behind Interview with the Vampire (1994) but tied with Desperado (1995)) even though i would say Assassins is my favorite Banderas character. but in terms of a lead or co-lead then Assassins is tied for my #1 spot with Desperado as with Interview with the Vampire he's not really too much of a major character in it.
