Dwight was right!

One thing I notice whenever I read comments about this movie is how Dwight was "Abusive." In fact, he wasn't. Yes... he had issues of his own that he needed to work out but I interpreted the physical altercations were a direct result of DiCaprio's characters lack of respect for him. Let's face it, Tobias was no angel and MOST of the things that happened to him directly resulted from his own actions.

In my opinion, Dwight was right in trying to help him correct his behavior. I got the impression that Dwight wouldn't have became such a jerk if the kid would have accepted his advice (or at least respected his opinion). Of course, Dwight is the adult and he was wrong to let it turn into a competition between the two, but "abusive"... no. He probably would have been ok if the kid had shown him a little respect.

Yes... Dwight has issues, "Doggie style or on your side.." but that isn't "abusive." Don't be so quick to file Dwight away as an abusive lunatic. Take a look at the people around him.

The wife deserved it, she was a piece of worthless *beep* Toby should have been sent to a correction facility where he could have been raped and abused by the other freaks. Finally, where does it say that Dwight was abusive to his own children?

Toby got off lightly compared to children that suffer real abuse.

well Tobias was a punk who needed discipline, this is something most of you dont seem to see.

Up untill the strangulation scene I was totally empathetic with Dwight. Toby behaved crazily and didn't respect Dwight at all. Everyone has different levels and styles of discipline and although some might not be easy to watch, you can't say catagorically what's right and what is wrong.

Most of us will be parents and evey child is different and circumstances etc blah blah.

More and more things are being classed as inhumane or cruel these days. A little bit of pain never hurt anyone. For very long anyway.

Dwight wasn't right or wrong. Just a parent with his own view on discipline (apart from strangling the kid) I don't condone that.

Put a bit of Celatape on the FRIDGE!

Well, he deserved :)

I agree, Dwight was good for Tobias. Not the abuse, or at least to the extent. I mean my dad, and my stepdad both got their butts handed to them quite a bit, so that was pretty common for fathers to be really strict in the 50's and 60s.I do think Dwight may have went way too far quite a few times(at least in the film). I think Dwight was good for Mr. Wolfe because he probably wouldn't have turned out to be the writer that he turned into, if it wasn't for those years he spent with Dwight. Was it Friedrich Nietzsche who said "That which does not kill you, makes you stronger".
Dwight didn't kill Mr. Wolfe, but he sure made him stronger.
