Doesn't anyone else think Rich's behaviour was rude even by "American standerds"? He puored soy sauce on the food that was meant for everyone else, and drank so much wine...
If he were at my family's table doing any of that, my uncles would probably kick him out... But aside from the Chinese manners doesn't it still seem a little rude?
It seems extraordinarily rude how Rich behaved with Lindo and her family. Almost bizarrely so! I mean, pouring salty soy sauce all over his host's dish? Some people could interpret his insensitivity as merely him not knowing about another culture's traditions and making innocent mistakes, or it could be interpreted that he felt, sub-consciously, that he didn't have to be as respectful around a family of a different ethnic background. That's always been a thought of mine in my years of watching the movie. My Italian-American dad, when he met my mom's African-American family, was IMMEDIATELY embraced. Why? Because he respected them. :) That's something I didn't really see with Rich in the movie.
Anyway, I never liked his character. I have no idea what Waverly saw in him, LOL.
Oh my goodness..thank you! I completely agree. That's also how I felt about Rich, that he didn't actually respect her family. As if he were superior to them in some way. Again as you say...subconciously. Thought I was alone in that.
Rest in Peace Maya Angelou and Ruby Dee. Two gifted, beautiful angels who will be dearly missed.
Hell yeah, he was rude. But there are people like that. In my culture, we call that "no home training" aka "No class." And Waverly thought she got a "best quality" man. LOL. I never thought about it until now, but she'll see that she got exactly what she deserves. Her mom was right when she points out that the hairs on her mink were too short, demonstrating how he really feels about her. Very subtle, but effective writing.
I thought this scene was bizarre & just plain DUMB! Americans don't act like that. The film at one point says that one of the characters (Andrew McCarthy's mom) was treating her like a Chinese stereotype. Well, this scene is treating Rich like an American stereotype. We don't pour condiments on an entire dish that others will eat, particularly when passing it around to everyone. The wine-gulping thing was another example of this. They were trying to make Rich look like a cracker-yahoo. He was goofy yes, but he was very very nervous & trying to 'lighten people up'. His spouse should have helped him out more BEFOREHAND.
That family was strange, I agree with the people who said "Just eat!" Heck, I say that to my own family when they have their own odd food *games*, and I am Italian/Irish!
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus." "Didn't he discover America?" "Penfold, shush."
I agree, I always wondered why that was considered "special Chinese dining rules." I thought it would've been rude behavior at any American family dinner.
Where exactly did this movie say that Rich's behavior was an "American stereotype"? I don't recall that being said at all. Rich's behavior would have been rude no matter where he did it.
The difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she is treated.
Not really. You have to remember that he didn't know the Chinese customs, like only sipping the wine like everyone else and when his upcoming mother in law criticized her cooking, he was supposed to say that it was fine, not try to improve it.
