Why this show failed

No Belding in the main cast. Nuff said. SBTB is NOTHING without BELDING.

reply

nah. that is BS.
I liked Belding and all when they were in high school, but he wasn't necessary anymore.
i loved this show as it was. hate it didn't last....

The reason this show failed is because IT STUNK! Wasn't funny, nothing original, and those "oooooohs" from the audience whenever two people even hugged to so annoying. Awful show, so glad it was cancelled.

reply

The reason why this show failed was because it aired in prime time. The audience was not their at that time.

reply

it had to change to much when they got older but they knew they couldnt go to far. they shoulda done it at like the earliest time on sundays which used to be more kids shows, up against 60 minutes. they couldnt decide whether to be mature or high school humor. it past its time.

reply

I totally agree with you!!

Aw, I love the oohs! It's those cheesy moments followed by the constant "oooh!" that made saved by the bell the corny classic that it is!

reply

its really sad that this show failed cuz I actually think its funny.

alot of the humor was more mature then highschool too.

too bad it didnt work out

reply

Well common, Slater, Kelly, Zach and Screech ALL go to the same college?!?! Ok have the spin off but it was trying way too much to adapt with the high school years. Too bad It was a childhood memory indeed.

reply

The ACTUAL reason this show failed has nothing to do with the show itself. The show Saved by the Bell was successful because it added something new to Saturday Morning television. They ran a series up against the #1 show, which was Bugs Bunny, and were able to forge a new audience and become a hit. They attempted to run a spinoff of that show, The College Years, in PrimeTime. This was destined to fail, and did, thanks to its new time slot.

It is not the same getting up at 5:00 in the morning to watch Saved By The Bell The College Years because those are reruns. I remember watching it on prime time and wondered why they did not put it on Saturday mornings for? The thing is that it was missing things and they changed the characters some even Kelly her personality changed in the College Year's. That is why it failed. Lisa and Jesse was not in the cast either and that is why it also failed.

reply

I think what happened was that this show was geered towards the people who were already fans of the original series. While The New Class took hold of new audiences(with recycled storylines) this was meant for the ones(like myself)who didn't want it to end.
When I first saw the show I enjoyed it, but felt at times diappointed that they didn't seem to grow up. I thought we would've had more adult style antics and hijinks instead we get High School type hijinks.
It was still fun to watch Zack, Slater, Screech and eventually Kelly back together, but it could've done better.
Also airing it in the evenings was a bad idea too. They didn't start airing it in the mornings until the show was cancelled...terrible descision by NBC.

reply

the writers have actualy said that it wasn't cancelled or whatever stuff liek that because the last eposide was liek about kelly and zack getting married and then came the wedding in las vegas movie so after them getting married what else was there to put?

reply

It was cancelled but they knew about it in time to do the wedding storyline to wrap up the series and then they did the movie.

It's not unusual for groups of students to all go to the same local college.

A bunch of me and my buddies did it. There was about 5 of us who all went to high school together and we ended up at the same college, too. And it was Penn State, and there's only a handful of schools that are bigger in this county. So, yes, this whole concept is actually pretty likely.

reply

Talk about Ironic, I start at Penn State in a few months.

I liked the College Years personally. I wish it'd of lasted longer, but hey to each their own.

reply

Yes but it wasn't a local college. Bayside High School was in the L.A. area, southern California. While their California University was set near Oakland or northern California. It was a few hundred miles for Zack, Screech, Slater and Kelly to go home for the weekend.

reply

This show needed better writing to make it primetime. The first episode was the best. It was a good break from the series. Zack, Bayside's former pimp daddy, got no yardage with his macking skills on college girls. He finally spends a Saturday alone at home. Slater, Bayside's number one recording breaking jock, was getting pinned down constantly by his college wrestling teammates. Screech, on the other hand, was hooking up with girls left and right, despite being Bayside's number one dork. That episode was perfect, but as soon as Kelly returned, the show took a nose dive. The focus thus turned on Zack coming up with the same lame schemes to win Kelly's heart and after that the show became just like Saved By The Bell, losing its potential to reach a more mature audience. What a shame.

This show never belonged on prime-time. It was fine as a Saturday morning show. Putting it in prime-time, though, was absurd.

reply

The idea of SBTB meets Friends and put on prime time just was disaster from the start. However, I was 12 at the time and loved every episode. WOW, I can't believe how long ago that was now. Geesh.

That's the main reason it failed. They were competing with shows like "Full House" and "90210".

reply

I agree with the original poster. The show was nothing without Belding. It was the equivalent of Boy Meets World without Mr. Feeny (wisely they took him along)...it just doesn't work!!!

reply

[deleted]

Yeah, I didn't like the fact that Jessie and Lisa weren't there. I didn't really like the new crew either and I hated Alex, by far the worst character.

reply

It wasn't nothing without Mr. Belding, but when he makes his special guest appearance in the Thanksgiving episode, a tear and smile formed. That was awesome. But again, I didn't like the new crew either, but just like this isn't Boy Meets World (taking Mr. Feeny along), this also isn't Saved By The Bell - High School Years.. This was college year. I would have liked to see more episodes, but then again, I really only watch it for Zack!!! :)

reply

I think the show should have kept Lisa. Lisa and Belding were the only two of the original cast that didn't continue on. There was the summer break SBTB that was without Belding, and those were some of my most favorite episodes. Also there was a season without Kelly, using the new girl Tori. So, we see that Kelly and Belding could be taken out of the show, but Lisa was in those episodes. I think Lisa was the mortor that held the Bricks of SBTB together.

If she was in it, she would see Skreech getting dates, and she would become jealous. They could have had a role reversal that would end up adding to the complexity of every ones relationship. Bringing Kelly back was a mistake.

Remember, before Kelly, Jessi, and A.C., there was Lissa.

let me just say that i a still tivo Saved by the Bell and The College Years and am, as we speak, watching an episode of The College Years....this show would have thrived on Saturday morning or in a Sunday early evening timeslot...if I remmeber correctly, when it aired it was againt 90210 on Wednesday nights...ironicially, Thiessen went on to boost the rating of the Spelling hit after The College Years wa cancelled. ....and i hvave to agree with all of you who commented on the stupud oohss and ahhs when Zack Kelly kissed in The College Years...

reply

I actually liked this show, it was quite humourous, and I loved when Kelly came back, lol..She was one of the only reasons I'd ever watch the show, in the first place, too bad it was cancelled.

kelly is the only reason a lot ofpeople watched the show.. lol shes so beautiful, but anyway- belding could have pulled a "mr. feeny" from 'boy meets world' (although obviously before that happened, im sure the creators saw that n realized after they got a nice long run they should have brought belding back) and ended up being the dean at their college or something .. haha that would have been awesome. i love him, his laugh is amazing. lol, AND this shouldnt have been on primetime. . . the original fans which were probably young- could have ranged middle school- college watched this.. they should have kept it saturday mornings ( i was about. . . 8 when this was canceled n i watched reruns when i was about 10 n have been a fan of the series n movies- not 'the new class' since i was about 11 lol)
