Baffled at Morgan Freeman's casting

No doubt, he's an excellent actor. But this movie's setting is 1880-1881, and Freeman is black.

When I first saw Ned, I assumed his race would play a role in some way; I figured people would bring it up a lot. Realistically, his race would be a big deal in this setting.

But there was ... nothing. It's as if Ned's race meant nothing, which is unrealistic. Why did they randomly cast a black man in this role?

Don’t ever watch man who shot liberty valance or you will be super butthurt about Wayne’s partner and that was in the 50s

Black cowboys, farmers, and ranchers existed from Texas all the way up to the Kansas and far west into California and Nevada.

Golden Age Hollywood's portrayal of the West as a romantic frontier with righteous white people taming the land and spawning the facade of the American Dream in the 20th Century still holds strong with many Americans who don't know better.

if you read imdb trivias they say ned is written as white man. that is your answers.

most token black role are part written as white man and given to black actor because a) they need token to fend off race accusation from racetards & b) more moneys from black audience who see movie because black man is in.

for ned in this film see myles dyson in t2, limo driver in die hard, oj as astronaut etc etc

Unlike a racist like yourself

EVEN in 1881 there were a lot of folks that didn't give a crap about race PARTICULARLY if the were working together

his role was clearly written as a white guy. they just needed a black guy in it for demographics reasons.
