Bobby and Jacques

Just finished a re-watch of FWWM and got to thinking about the scene where, by all appearances, Jacques sets Bobby up to get gunned down at a drug transaction.

The only reason I can think of for Jacques doing this to Bobby was that Lynch wanted to have a tie-in to something that was mentioned in the pilot, that Bobby "killed a guy." It was never further addressed in the TV series. If I remember correctly the information came from James, who told Donna that this was something Laura had told him while she was in a deranged state of mind.

Ok.

But three things: When we go back and watch TP's Season 1 & 2 Bobby seems unconcerned that Jacques (apparently) wants him dead. Another thing is that Laura told James that Bobby "told" her he killed a guy, while in FWWM she actually witnesses the killing. Lastly, Jacques doesn't appear to worry that the guy he tried to off escaped and might come back at him.

It's a puzzle because Lynch really didn't need to have that scene in FWWM, it could easily have been left out. I'm going to have to think about this one a bit more . . .

Who says Jacques set him up? The guy could have kept the dope himself after leaving Jacques and switched it to laxative before he met Bobby. Drug dealers and their cohorts are not known for their honesty.

Well, no one. But it sure looks that way to me. Jacques demeanor and what he says to Bobby is why I think it's a set-up.

Jacques says to Bobby:

"How come you only call me when you are desperate? Are you desperate, baby?"

He is annoyed that Bobby only "uses" him, that much is clear.

Then Jacques says:

"I have a friend who has what you want. His stuff is the best."

Then he has this look on his face, a look that says he's up to no good.

None of this is proof either way, but even if Jacques didn't set him up to be killed, Bobby would surely have had a word with Jacques about the incident.

It was Jacques "friend" after all. Don't you think when the friend disappeared Jacques would ask Bobby about that?

So, either way . . .

Bit of a stretch thinking Jacques would want Bobby dead for only wanting him for his drugs. But the beauty of Lynch and Twin Peaks is you can look a things from different perspectives, he leaves it up to the viewer to fill in the blanks.

I could have clarified that a bit. Jacques doesn't appear to be complaining about being contacted for drugs (though it might be that), but the more general complaint "only . .when you are desperate." Though I can't imagine what else Bobby would be pestering Jacques about other than drugs, so we are left to ponder the implications. The point is that Jacques is bothered by it.

If Jacques did not set Bobby up, I suppose after the incident Bobby could have confronted Jacques and then been given reassurance that he was not set up. Then that would be that. Neither would report the dead body to the police for obvious reasons.

Indeed he does and we love the world of Twin Peaks all the more because of the blanks.
