I believe it is. It's much shorter and much more intense. T2 is obviously great too but it's a bit long and bloated and has a lot James Cameron shmaltz. I am thoroughly entertained by it everytime I see it but I never got why people almost universally preferred it over the first film.
I prefer T1 for its claustrophobic atmosphere, but its practical effects look very dated now. I can imagine they turn off younger viewers. T2, on the other hand, looks seamless 30+ years later.
Better story by far... but effects and action are clearly much better in T2. I prefer the first, but the second is better for rewatchability. Same with Matrix 1 vs 2.
The first terminator was written and directed by a young upcomer who wanted to break into the business, and it shows in a good way. Its a nicely packaged story. I've seen my share of T2, but nowadays can't stand it, well maybe except for the main title sequence, which is a wet dream of a pyromaniac. I definately prefer the original. T2 has aged very badly, including its once groundbreaking effects.
Too much humour. Chase scenes become repetitive. Arnold is more Arnold than a terminator. T2 was basically a watered down remake of the original, but with bigger budget, more sophisticated effects and wider audience appeal. Linda Hamilton's transformation from the first movie was great, though. I have the same problem with most Cameron's movies. I find only the first Terminator and The Abyss (extended cut) interesting movies from him. I rank him maybe the most overrated director of all time, nevermind he's the box office champion.
But the opening scene and the main title sequence of T2 are still great.
