Better than WofK ?

I would say so, in every way, but it seems like most people disagree. What about you ?

I always prefered "The Undiscovered Country".
"Wrath of Khan" has some qualities above TUC but overall TUC is the better looking and sounding movie with a great take on the Klingons and the end of the Cold war.
It has thematic depth and depth in the portrayal of the characters and the more intgeresting story and character themes than TWoK imo.

There's just too much stupid out of character stuff in TUC. Yeah, TWOK is riddled with plot holes, but it doesn't have Uhura struggling to translate Klingonese from hardback books or pots cooking on a stove in the galley. There's a very nice flow to TWOK whereas TUC seems more pieced together.

Besides...TWOK still has the REAL Enterprise.

Disagree. And Enterprise is Enterprise, man

Not for me. The Enterprise was like a character in TOS. She was Kirk's true love. The "A" was just another ship.

reply

Lol that's Serenity, not Enterprise. Kirk likes his ship as a captain, like all Enterprise-captains after him, but that's it. If he can have a more powerful vessel to command, he will be happy about it.

I suggest that you watch the episode The Naked Time, or The Motion Picture. She was more than that to Kirk.

Never would I rewatch TMP, and I don't remember teh E having had any specific treatment in it. As for Naked Time, Kirk was crazy, so it counts only partially. But maybe you are right. Anyway I'm not Kirk and the original Enterprise was too weak for my taste, I'd go for the Enterprise-E or the one from Abrams's alternate reality.

I used to sort of feel that way about TMP, but I did re-watch it and quite honestly, I think it's the best of the entire series. It holds more true to the TV show - more about exploration and boldly going where no man has gone before - before the movies shifted gears and became action sci-fi movies. Nothing wrong with that, but they started to move away from Roddenberry's vision. I suggest re-watching it, you might be pleasantly surprised (but then again, I don't know you and you probably won't budge. oh well.)

Imo the problem with TMP is that it tries to imitate Kubrick's '2001' (pure art and engagement from the viewer who is required to think), forgetting that Star Trek is also supposed to be entertaining. There is a gap between Motion Picture-bore and crappy scifi action à la 'First Contact'; a Star Trek movie doesn't have to be one or the other.

It's my favorite ST movie -- I think seeing it in the theater back in '91 is a big reason why. There are definitely plot holes, things that make little sense, and really bad historical analogies but the movie was so epic, and intertwined with the end of the Cold War, that I'm willing to look past them.

reply

It comes close for me but not quite. It has some really great high points but a few stupid moments leave it second to WofK, which was more consistent, in my opinion. It is frustrating that a few small easy changes, that have nothing to do with the big picture of the story, could have made it damn near perfect trek film.

Abide.

I would say TUC falls into 2nd place for me. WOK has a tighter story line and villain.

TUC had a the perfect ending scene for the crew. However the photon torpedo mystery seemed better for TV then a feature film. The more interesting Kirk/McCoy story really saved the film.
