Hannibal Lecter - likeable?

I mean, he is indeed a monster and a mass murderer no doubt. But in this movie, it seems as if, not only by contrast to Buffalo Bill he comes across as the better of the two, but in general, many audiences find him somewhat likeable and we even somewhat find ourselves rooting for him when he escapes. But is that the way it was meant to be?

And the fact that he really gets under the skin of Clarice Starling who ends up understanding him and he seems to have some moral standards as well.

So is he supposed to be a total monster? Or a flawed but somewhat likeable and with redeeming qualities individual albeit still a mass criminal?

And in cinematic technical terms, is he more of a villain or anti-hero in this, cheers.

The movie definitely made him out to be a likeable monster. It really says something when I feel sorry for a convicted murderer/cannibal because they lied to him about transferring him to a prison with a view of a ocean for helping them...but I couldn't give two shts about Chilton about to become Lector's dinner at the end of the movie.

NO...HANNIBAL LECTOR IS DEFINITELY A VILLAIN...ANTHONY HOPKINS THOUGH...THAT MOTHER FUCKER IS IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO LOVE...IT'S THE MIX OF DESPICABLE CHARACTER AND LOVABLE ACTOR THAT MAKES HANNIBAL THE ICON THAT HE IS...IF THEY HAD CAST BILLY DRAGO OR ERIC ROBERTS OR PRETTY MUCH ANYONE ELSE...THE CHARACTER WOULD BE PURE VILLAIN WITHOUT THE LIKABLE SPINE.

reply

As likeable and pretty as Eric Roberts is though. Lol.

Also, given how he made Miggs swallow his own tongue for the gross act of misconduct he did against Starling in one scene and at one point, I kind of wonder, would he handle say other enemies in similar ways were he to get the chance? And how would someone like Lecter feel about say female villains or those as such who may at some point "turn to dark sides" and do some kind of terrible and wrongful, including criminally offensive, deeds, like tropes in some films we've seen? Would he treat them differently than their mostly violent MALE predatory equivalents? Would he, maybe in some cases more than others, embrace feminism and turn the other cheek and if well LAW says a person must be punishment, either turn them to law or encourage law on them?

He seems like a monster with some standards though.

I don't know if likable is quite the word. I had a similar reaction to him that I did to the mobsters in Goodfellas and Casino. They are intriguing and charismatic. Watching them is entertaining, but they are also awful people who I wouldn't really want to get to know personally. Maybe charismatic is the word.

reply

I AGREE WITH THAT...SOME VERY FUCKED UP PEOPLE CAN ALSO BE VERY CHARISMATIC...WHICH FEELS A LOT LIKE LIKABLE FROM THE OUTSIDE.

I won't go into this too much but I've seen an interview with a psychologist and he says interviewing psychopaths in prison is a lot of fun. They are so interesting, engaging, charismatic etc. There's that one insider short interview between BTK and his court appointed psychiatrist on YouTube. BTK is simply telling this guy the truth, his fantasies were stuck in his head, he couldn't do anything about it..they both understand and the interview is fun and lighthearted, even though they're talking about his severe addiction to BIND, TORTURE, AND KILL PEOPLE!

Jonathan Demme cast Hopkins based on his performance in The Elephant Man where he plays a deeply compassionate doctor. He said Lecter is a good man trapped inside a monster.

Whether through nature or nurture Lecter’s brain is damaged and he feels a compulsion to dominate those who disrespect him by killing and eating them, but beneath those impulses lie a deeply empathetic, learned and creative mind. In many ways he’s a genius, and we admire gifted, strong people.

His ‘code’ is also… admirable. He only enjoys killing and eating people who have mistreated him or others he deems worthy of respect. He wouldn’t dream of hurting Barney, but he’s having Chiltern for dinner. Making Miggs choke to death on his own tongue for jizzing on Clarice was, in a deeply twisted way, chivalrous.

But let’s not get too seduced by him. He feels no remorse and didn’t think twice about murdering the two security guards and the dude in the ambulance for his escape. We then hear he murdered two tourists, most likely for money and clothes - two completely innocent people minding their own business.

The film enjoys messing with us. They portray one of the most fearsome movie villains of all time then make him charming and almost admirable. If we saw him needlessly murder an innocent person for sheer sadistic pleasure then we’d have a different view.

Actually, it’s worth comparing Hopkins’ Lecter to Brian Cox’s version. The latter still had a unique charm, but he was less likeable and conspired to kill Will Graham’s wife and child to spite him for capturing Lecter.

There was a side to him that was likeable..and there was a side to him that was unlikable. He was good at helping detectives.
