This really pissed me off!

Okay, so the father of the bride pays for the wedding. It's a tradition that no longer exists and by 1991, I'd say it didn't really exist either.

But movies have suspension of belief. So let's play along.

One thing I cannot buy is the idea that George paid for relatives of the groom to fly in from Holland. WTF?!?! No. And he takes it on the chin? No scene of him losing his shit? No going crazy and saying it's outrageous?

It's rubbish. Even if this stupid tradition still existed in 1991 it wouldn't have included paying for guests to go to the wedding. Unacceptable.

Where exactly? Most couples pay for their own wedding.

Why? A young couple doesn't need the extra expense. My dad paid for his daughters' weddings. Though they weren't that expensive. Expense was mostly the food & décor, both bought in bulk. Ended up with a ton of awesome leftovers. No way he was paying for travel.

My uncle paid for a big wedding for my (female) cousin a few years back, only for them to get divorced a year later. OUCH

It's just there to add to his frustration at the ever growing bill for this lavish affair when he could've held it at the Steakhouse.

I agree with the TC that George shouldn't have had to pay for the family to come in from Denmark. On top of everything else I just multiplied just how much it costs everyone to eat the food and it's $112,750 ($250 a head times the 451 people going to the wedding). Which back then was a lot more money. I really doubt that any of the weddings I've ever had in my family cost that much. Then again I'm pretty sure there weren't 451 people at any wedding I went to either. But it's all played for laughs because of how George gets so stressed out over the wedding.

George had to pay for it because of his stupid pride. The wealthy soon-to-be in-laws offered to help with the costs and he refused to allow it.

ABLE AND COMFORTABLE ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS...GEORGE BANKS WAS MORE THAN ABLE TO PAY,HE WAS LESS THAN COMFORTABLE WITH THE RISING TOTAL THOUGH.

Kind of late to respond but Nina did have a job. It's not specifically stated what it is but she briefly says she has a client she's not inviting to the wedding. So she does have a job. We just don't get to know what it is.

It's a tradition and It still happens. My wife's parents paid for our wedding and we had to reel them back. They wanted string quartets, a big dance, etc... we got it down to just the wedding followed by a brunch. We asked to do a pot luck with close family and friends, but they insisted we have a catered reception.

We got the whole thing down to $10k (the reception hall and catering was 99% of the cost).

We have friends now who are saving for their Daughters wedding.

This is a comedy and meant tohave fun with exaggerated behaviors of the actual tradition.

The tradition definitely still exists if the parents can afford it.

The world is changing, and many reasons are causing the undoing of this tradition:

- People don't save like they used to.
- Parents don't save because they are selfish, guilty of envy, and spend-spend-spend, to "have what they're having"
- Women's lib has gutted the perception that "my father owns me and owes me"
- Parents just can't afford it anymore, because they already pissed away enough money on college for the kids
