On the movie cometary Billy Crystal said it was a licensing issue with the MLB. The stunt man was already wearing the Mets cap in the Pamplona running of the bulls scenes so Crystal had to go with it. Billy Crystal had to admit in hindsight that the Mets had done a lot for the Comic Relief charity.

reply

I read (or heard on Sports Radio) is that Billy Crystal approached the Yankees about helping with a charity he was working with at the time of the movie. The Yankees passed, but the METS signed up. To thank them he wore the Mets hat!

reply

ctsquared is right; he said on WFAN in NY on the Joe & Sid show that the Mets helped out his Comic Relief cause that he used to do with Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams (I guess film some sort of vignette at their stadium) so to repay the Mets for their generosity he wore the hat. When asked how he could wear such a hat when he is a diehard Yankee fan he reminded the hosts that it was only a movie afterall.

WHAT IS IT ANYWAY WITH THE 2ND TEAMS IN NEW YORK,THEY ALWAYS GET LAUGHED AT,OR PUT DOWN.THOSE POOR METS,JETS,AND ISLANDERS!

reply

Islanders?! Whadda you tawkin' about? They won four cups in a row, and the Rangers have won one in maybe 60 years!

Yeah, and how long ago was that?

reply

The Yankees are kinda a second team now.

reply

I've never heard of them being laughed at for simply being the "second" team in New York. The Giants may have three Super Bowl titles and multiple pre-Super Bowl NFL titles but the Jets won Super Bowl III which was one of the most historic victories in sports history, the Mets have won the World Series twice which only sounds like nothing when comparing to the Yankees but I'd take that compared to other teams (see Cubs, Chicago), and the Islanders as another poster said won multiple Stanley Cups in the '80's while the Rangers have one since 1940.

As for NY's first and only basketball team....how about the Knicks? Until the Nets move to Brooklyn, the Knicks are the only NY basketball team and they are one of the biggest laughingstocks in not only the NBA but in all professional sports.

Well, when the movie was filmed, the Mets were coming off 7 straight seasons of 1st or 2nd place finishes. The Yankees were coming off a last-place finish and were pretty lousy the year before that. The Mets were pretty consistently outdrawing the Yankees in attendance at that point.

There's probably more to it than that, but the situation in 1990-1991 with respect to the relative popularity/glamour of the NY teams was very different from what it is today.

I met Billy... Ran Followspot for his show before it went to broadway... THE MAN'S LOYALTY TO "HIS YANKEES" IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!
I really wish I noticed this detail while I was still working with him 'cause it would have been fun poke fun at him...

Incidentally, the story he tells in the movie about his first Yankees game is actually a true story from his own life... he performs a slightly longer version of the monologue in the show...

reply

I believe Billy is one of those NYers that does also root for the Mets when they aren't playing the Yankees. Ira & Barry in the film are also portrayed as being Mets fans as they are seen talking on there early 90s cell phone asking him for a Mets score. In Running Scared Billy wears a Cubs jacket in some parts of the film. He is simply a big baseball fan!

HOW CAN A TEAM SUCK WHEN THEY HAVE WON 26 WORLD SERIES?HOW MANY HAVE THE METS DRAWN?AND BY THE WAY THE METS DON'T DRAW AS MUCH AS THE YANKEES DO,AND THEIR ATTENDANCE ISN'T THAT GREAT.THE METS REALLY TOOK A STAB IN THE FOOT WHEN THE WILPONS LOST THAT LONG ISLAND BID TO CHARLES WANG,WHO OWNS THE ISLANDERS.THE METS WOULD HAVE DONE BETTER THERE,THAN IN QUEENS.I MEAN WHY DO YOU THINK THE JETS DON'T WANNA GO BACK THERE.

reply

There have been times in the last 83 years when the Yankees came in last place. Guess what! They sucked those years just as all last place teams do.

reply

it's funny that his kid in the the movie turned out to be a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain.

reply

Maybe because wearing a Mets cap isn't as offensive as wearing a Yankee cap.

The filmmakers wanted the audience to like Mitch. People generally don't like Yankee fans.

reply

Either way, the year City Slickers was filmed the Mets were the "in" team in NY...plain & simple.

The Yankees didn't start shining until after the 94 strike....and that's when SALARIES started going OUT OF CONTROL...and that is why the Yankees of today have a salary well over $200 million.

Too bad those BILLIONS of dollars the Yank-mees have spent over the last 7 years hasn't bought them a championship...HA HA! Sorry Yank-mee fans!
