Who is the worst character in this movie in your opinion?

IMHO I've thought Brenda (Doughboy & Ricky's mother) was the worst character in the movie, I totally hated the scene where she blames Ricky's death on Doughboy and yells & screams at him for it, that made me feel sorry for Doughboy, I also hated how she showed more favoritism towards Ricky over Doughboy.

Ahhh totally agree. Before I even clicked on this, when I saw the title I thought of the mother. As seen in the earlier years, she definitely played favorites with her sons. That stuff does some serious inferiority complex on you, not to mention the murder of his brother to top it off. I guess he only had another 2 weeks of life after that, but still.

There's also the obvious one, the guy who gunned down Ricky. When I first saw this film I was a teen but was in a dark phase of my life. I thought I was pretty hard, but that scene where they're just chowing down burgers after gunning him down seemed even way too cold hearted than what I thought humans were capable of.

I know I had developed some inferiority complex due to certain types of people treating me like a lesser person, I feel Ricky's murder should've been a time for Doughboy and Brenda to be there for each other and for her to realize she should've been more kind and loving towards Doughboy.

I agree the scene where the gang members eating burgers after the murder shows how heartless they were and that they didn't care what they did was wrong, I was glad Doughboy got his revenge on those guys.

Murdah murdah! Off to in'n'out Burgah!

You’re being a little too hard on Brenda. Her comments towards Doughboy, after they bring Ricky home, are more heat-of-the-moment remarks, spoken out of trauma. They were not legitimate feelings.

She did treat Ricky differently, but there was a good reason. Doughboy was, really, an abrasive criminal, who spent his time drinking alcohol, calling women “hos,” playing cards, and using drugs etc. Ricky, in contrast, was on his way to college, didn’t use drugs, and had respect for people.

Brenda did love Doughboy imo. You see her reaction when he gets arrested, the way she looks as if she is about cry. She has more tough love to Doughboy because Doughboy needed it

As for the worst character — I pick the crackhead lady. Keep them babies off the street!

I would've liked Brenda more if she hadn't lost her temper at Doughboy when she realizes Ricky was murdered by a rival gang, I didn't think she was too bad of a parent up until that scene, I do agree Doughboy was an abrasive criminal and did call women "ho's" and getting involved with drugs.

Brenda was vile. "Tough love" my ass. She was fawning over Ricky when they were children and yelling at Doughboy to "get your fat ass" to school. That kind of abusive talk can damage children forever. Furious was all about the tough love and he did it in the right way, showing his son affection and encouraging him but teaching him discipline and respect. Brenda was just a cold, nasty bitch.

She recognized Doughy as the black sheep or a lost cause early on & was doing the right thing by treating Ricky better. He was their ticket out of the Ghetto & they were that close.

reply

No kid is a "lost cause". Demeaning and belittling kids will certainly help them to being lost causes though...

tough love in Black America's kinda depressing

Brenda was not bad. She was actually a good mother. Doughboy fell victim to the street life that plagued South Central LA at the time. With no father figure, he had to be the man.
He was looking out for himself and his brother to survive in a deadly environment. Even going back to as kids when he had to stand up for Rick to get his ball back.

But also, ever since a young boy he was in trouble with the law. He got involved with drug dealing, gangs, and gun violence. When he came home from prison his mother set up a very nice "welcome home" cookout for him. Inviting all their friends from the neighborhood. When Tre shows up she asks him to try to talk to Darren because shes "so sick of him going in and out" She wanted the best for her kids and its very hard for a single mother to deal with all of that. Its easy and natural to think "why can't you just be like your brother"

Then, Doughboy and Ricky just got into a fight infront of the house before Ricky got murdered. Brenda knew Ricky was her prized child with a bright future, while Dough was more of a hopeless thug. She had done all she could. So when she sees Rick dead she blames Dough thinking he took it too far after their fight or something.

She was actually a good mom that already been through a lot of pain.

My most hated would be the black cop that harasses Tre and Rick, the drug dealer that takes Rick's ball, or any of the thugs who were responsible for Rick's murder.

I agree with you that the black cop who was harassing Tre and Ricky was an racist ass----, I couldn't stand him, I sometimes wonder how does the white cop put up with him? I know I would be pissed if I were in Tre & Ricky's shoes, I know find him to be a much worse character than Brenda, plus I find corrupted police officer's abusing their authority to be worse people than parents showing favoritism towards one child over the other.

Keep in mind, Doughboy had put his mom through a lot of stress, pain, and grief. By going in and out of jail, drug slingin', etc. Even after that she still gave him a place to stay and cared for him. Ricky was the younger brother so still her baby boy. And he seemed to do everything right. He gave his mother no headaches.

As for the cops, I think its the whole "blue wall of silence" Where the cops just stand by their fellow cops and don't speak out against it. Sad indeed.

Agree with this

We have a winner.

Can’t do much worse than a black racist cop terrorizing an innocent black youth to tears and calling him “boy.” And so it goes on.

reply

I'd say Ferris since he was an antagonist and took part in Ricky's murder and intimidating Tre in the beginning.

reply

The guys who killed Ricky
The bullies who took Ricky's football in the beginning of the movie
The school teacher
Brenda
Ricky's girlfriend
Brandi's mom
The coked out mother who let her kids roam the streets by themselves
The racist cop

All in no order, by the way. :)
