"Orientals"

The business guy makes continued references to the "orientals". Today, use of that term is archaic. I am not making a point about pc, I am just stating a fact, as someone who has been to Asia.

Yeah....it's pretty much general knowledge that the word 'orientals' is not the correct reference...inside or outside Asia.

Good thing it was neither made nor set in "today", then.

As others have said, it wasn't at the time.

You might also be interested in this, concerning use of the term in the UK. Which as you know, is where these films are made, and where they don't have a history of using Oriental as a racial slur...

"In British English, the term Oriental refers to people from East and Southeast Asia. On the other hand, the word "Asian" refers to people from South Asia. Therefore, Orientals is the only term which can refer to people of East Asian origin."

I am just stating a fact, as someone who has been to Asia.

What does going to Asia have to do with anything? You don't have to go all the way over there to find out that it's not considered PC over here. They probably don't even care over there.

And yet Orient is still where it used to be.

It's quite difficult to get, really, why would anyone consider "Orientals" offensive as some apparently do.

reply

It's actually more descriptive and specific than "Asian". There are plenty of natives of Asia who don't fit the description of people from East and Souteast Asia.

reply

No, it's not. Oriental could also include the Near East. Not many would use the term "Asian" to refer to that area.

reply

It's weird how people don't mind using this term for objects, like an "oriental rug". If it's a racist term then it's a racist term, and just say "asian rug".

Sig, you want a sig, here's a SIG-sauer!

You are MAKING A POINT about being politically correct! I am SO SICK + DISGUSTED w/WHINY LOSERS that are SO SNOWFLAKED and NEED THEIR WIMPY SAFE SPACE because they got a hissyfit over a name calling! If this were the late 1930's~ WE'D ALL BE SPEAKING GERMAN OR A BECOME A LAMPSHADE!

reply

look ^ , theres one of those "real man" "non snowflakes" who doesent get upset and offended at everything

... having a good old shouty whining complaining session.

reply

Sorry, that IS PC.

Whoever decided "oriental" is racist or "archaic" had no more basis for that than did whoever decided to say "Hispanic" or "Latino" instead of "Mexican" (which are genetically different things).

If you have been to Asia, you know that over there, they don't lump themselves into any one category. Even in China, the people stratify themselves as "Han," "Mongolian," etc. In the racially "sensitive" US, they dictate lumping "Pacific Islanders" (also three or more separate peoples) into the same basket on the ridiculous forms and days.

This is where control of the language started in the Marxist/Fascist division of the US as part of controlling the narrative to keep us divided, quibbling over trivia while the important stuff goes down the tubes.

reply

I don't really see why it is offensive. Orientals - people from what was called "The Orient". It's okay for rugs, okay for food, why not people? People get lumped into big groups all the times. "Americans" certainly covers a lot. Or how about "Westerners" or "The West"? No need to get panties in a twist over it.

reply

Right.

You can say "Frenchman" or "Englishman," but not "Chinaman?"

People make this up to wrest control and refocus us on meaningless conflicts instead of real ones.

reply

Its very offensive
